Hi everyone.
I'm changing my car in a couple of weeks and was thinking of buying the Tomtom GO 940 Live but after reading some of the threads within the forum I not really convinced how well it works.
In my current car I'm using the Parrot CK3300 bluetooth handsfree/GPS car kit with Tomtom Navigator on my personal Nokia N95 with Tomtom Navigator on and my work HTC P4350.
The Parrot CK330 is connected via an ISOfix connector which mutes the music when instructions are played or a call comes in and I've found that my current setup works really well.
But I really want something with a bigger screen than the Nokia N95.
I also use my Nokia N95 with a portable GPS Receiver when I'm walking.
So, before buying one I thought I would see what other members thoughts of the GO 940 are?
For example:
What is the Bluetooth handsfree connection like, i.e. speaker quality, microphone quality, reliability, etc.
Do the instructions and calls play through the in-built speaker or can they be played through the cars audio system?
What is the contacts feature like, i.e. can you access the phones contacts through the GO 940 unit?

Speaker and Mic quality is good, however reliability isn't too good. Occasionally (about 7-10 days) the phone and 740 refuse to connect meaning i have to delete the pairing a re-pair them. It's a common problem unfortunately. I ended up buying an iOPlay Car Kit which sounds similar to your Parrot kit.

Instructions can be played through the cars audio system if you have the active mount and you connect it via a lead to the stereo AUX in. Alternatively it also supports A2DP Streaming so i have my 740 connected to my iOPlay Car Kit and it interrupts the radio / CD when needed.

Yes, the "Lives" can be used for walking with three caveats: Battery life is quite short, much worse than other TT models. 2nd, there is no "screen lock" like on the Garmin nuvis so unintended screen taps/menu changes can be a problem. Third, unless you are walking briskly, TomTom's are slow to update your position. I think this is something to do with the SiRf star III chipset. My mio C701 has it programmed with a 3mph (might be 3 kph) minimum speed, so you have to walk quickly, or quite a long way before it updates your position. I think it is done this way to cut down on speed and position 'jitter'. This facility can be 'programmed out' but it is not a job for the faint hearted or inexperienced because you could quite easily brick the device , even if you have the correct software to program the chipset.
Any other device? I think from what I've read, the best way forward is to separate the tasks. Get the best car navigation system you can, and then get the best walking/general GPS you can. That way the compromises are optimal.
But that said, consider the iPhone. With TomTom and others now available, it is likely that a walking navigator may appear. There is already the OS Maps application, and of course Google maps, but currently they download maps over the air, and while you can know exactly where you are in a lovely spot, a completely blank map due to no phone signal doesn't really help much.
