this sounds like an odd thing to ask...

Do the devices wear out ? I've had a one 3rd edition since they were released and have noticed its getting worse at first getting then keeping the satalite signal. The divice is used mostly in two different cars, i keep the quick fix part updated as well. Lately though the performance is rubbish..

..confusing

Do you have long breaks between uses? (I'm thinking that the battery / capacitor that holds the data while it's turned off is going). I wouldn't have though this would be much of an issue though.

When starting off after it hasn't been used for a time, let it find the satellites before moving. Even leaving it on the windowsill before leaving the house before setting off can make a big difference.

Another thing to check is whether you have amassed loads of POI sets. If they are set to show on the map, it can slow the unit down considerably whilst in use. Just use the "warn when near" function as necessary for the set you must be warned of (like the cameras Wink ).

I don't think they wear as such ,but if it has been dropped a lot I suppose a connector or 2 could get loose but from what you saying I do doubt it

Think GerryC has it spot on.

the device is used monday to friday 9 -5 as i am a service engineer travelling all over the UK. There maybe the odd day when it doesnt get used if i am in the office otherwise its always on.

The unit has had its share of tumbles, but nothing I wouldnt expect tomtom to cope with. Sucker cup failing on the windscreen making the unit fall inside the car. Nothing onto anything really solid.

At first i thought it was windscreen becuase i changed vehicles but then it started to play up in my own car.

Do you have Startup Preferences on that device? If so, have you ticked "Continue where I left off"?

Simple answer is "yes" they can go out of alignment and not work so well.
I've seen two identical units placed in exactly the same position (one after the other) and one gets far better reception then the other.

Whether you call it "wearing out" is up to you! Smile
