i used to have a garmin 660fm which was a fantastic unit.
never let me down, fast to re draw and was quite smooth at moving around the screen.
i have updated the unit to a garmin 765t.
i have covered about 1000 miles over the last few days and here is my view....

what a big let down!!!
it's very slow. the re draw is unbelievable slow. the unit can't keep up with me when i drive down the road and when it re draws the info i get a blank screen for 20-30 seconds.
most of the time all i see is a line with a car and the rest of the screen blank.
the city view don't work around here only in major city's so is a complete wast of time.

i hear from a tech guy other lower spec systems in garmin range use a new smooth map/ re draw system that is not used on the 765t unit..

i considered upgrading the unit to the 865t but i guess it would use the same software.. and also Halfords don't stock it only the older 860 model..

i am so disappointed and let down by garmin..
my view would be stay well away from this unit..

mine is going back for a refund hopefully if not what do i get instead??

my unit has the latest maps after upgrade and has all the latest software on it.....

one good thing though, the traffic master told me there was a traffic jam, just a shame it told me when i was in it :-(

Oh Dear!!!

Just when I thought I would be edging towards the Garmin 765T Sad

Can anyone else confirm Dugsofts 'redraw' issue, or otherwise?

Well i have a 760 and 765 here and the 765 is a lot faster and smoother than the 760. I can't see that dugsoft experience is typical.

If i were dugsoft i'd contact garmin, get a replacement. Maybe try a reset first.

To reset Nuvi:

1.- Power off the GPS
2.- Press and hold the right bottom corner
3.- Power on
4.- System asks if you are sure to delete all custom data and setting.
5.- If you answer "yes" next screen looks like brand new device

You'll loose Custom POIs and Favourites but it might help.

You can save your favorites by connecting your nuvi to computer, then saving the current.gpx located in the Garmin/gpx folder file to your desktop (or wherever). After the hard reset, copy it back.

Thanks for your response after my post Paul.
Dugsoft... I would be interested in hearing of the outcome after a reset and/or replacement.

I originally had problems with the 765T. However after a friend bought one and that performed without problems I took the big step and bought another one. In over a month it has performed without any problems, no shutdowns or other malfunctions and the re-draw is fast and superb.

A super, duper unit.

I have previously used StreetPilots (2820 and 2610) and ViaMichelin but finally broke down and bought a Nuvi 765T. After all the comments here, it was with some trepidation that I used it on a recent trip to France (without any backup). I must say that it worked well and did exactly what it was supposed to do. The display is good, the mounting solid, it is light and easy to carry around. All the information displayed was easy to follow and useful. Downsides are the redraw is not as fast as the streetpilot, particularly after recalculating, the bluetooth functionality is limited (I would like to use a bluetooth headset WITH my phone) and sometimes the routing was not as great (I was routed through the middle of Grenoble instead of using the bypass).

I still miss all the features and functionalities of both my StreetPilto and Via Michelin (particularly the Michelin Guide)

Sad
My testing and comparison with a recently repaired TT GO720 is now leaving me with a few conclusions:-
The GO 720 can be set to ALWAYS give road numbers as well as street names whilst the 765T mainly gives street names only, in most cases, and road numbers for 'some' major roads and all motorways.
i.m.o. a big plus for practical navigation.
The 765T has tried to get me to go the wrong way down a one way single track road, mapping error!! but TT had it right.
The 765T when set to fastest route can ignore some obvious shortcuts down minor roads wheas TT goes the way I would have chosen!
Traffic, so far, on 765 has always been green!?????????
TT camera database is more extensive, up to date and cheaper.
765T screen is very bright and clear and I like the 'longer' 3D view. Screen refreshing rates, although there is still a slight problem, have not been disconcerting.
Lane guidance on motorways for 765T is great.

My rating:- TTgo720 75% 765T 65%

You will never get a resounding yes or no when comparing Tom Tom and Garmin. I think there are pros and cons to both. But, simple it may be, I always remember that Garmin make units for aircraft navigation and Tom Tom (to my knowledge) do not. I have had one dud 2820 which I returned and was refunded in full with no questions asked.

Yes, thanks Michael.
I need to stop sitting on the fence and get on with it!

I must say, the screen brightness of my Nuvi 670FM is far better than my previous TT GO, and brightness during bright daylight is important.
(We are planning to do a bit of motoring in France this summer)

As long as there are no huge differences or problems with either TT or Garmin then I believe it will be the Garmin 765T for me.
(By the way, is there a 765 without the T?)

I do not know really. There may be others who know but be sure you get one with the full European maps if you are going to France and I would also sign up for the Traffic option for France which is quite good (supplied by ViaMichelin) specially in the summer. However, would suggest you do not always believe the traffic delays as sometimes by the time you get to the area of delay it has been cleared (and of course sometimes not and then you will be in trouble!).

Damn you people who have lovely working 765T units!! Mad
only joking, glad its all sorted now

i had one for a while and loved it, apart from awful re-draw rates and sometimes STUPID routing, plus mine done the usual re-booting itself

i took mine back and bought a TomTom 940 Go, that has had problems aswell, but sent it back to TT and they fixed it, its been great now... well pleased, though i do miss my Garmin.... im almost tempted to get one as it was brilliant in southern ireland where i take my band to do lots of gigs..
Mmmmmm, tempted again!!
