I'm going to Texas in April and as I'm not great at multitasking (navigating and staying on the right side of the road - at least I don't have to change gear as the hire cars are all autos!) I thought I'd buy my first SatNav.

I found the Garmin Nuvi 270 at Amazon.com for $150.66 (plus I'd need to buy a mains charger when i get home).

This is the cheapest I can find that'll do US mapping while I'm there and also be usable when I get home AND still work the next time I go to France/Holland (maybe next year!).

Any comments:

-Is it any good?

-Is there a cheaper alternative?

-Is there anything similar with traffic updates without paying massively more?

thanks for your help

Did you really mean a 910, casper?

They are very old now. I would go for a refurb. Go 920 or a 930, or a Go 720/730 plus an extra US map.

Shouldn't a moderator edit this to remove the phone number?

The "PM" (personal message) system is a much safer way to share personal details, casper!

I didn't offend me, I just thought you might get deluged with dodgy phone calls! Shocked (similar to what can happen if you put your full email address in a post).

As for the prices, yes I agree that's about the cheapest way to get a device with full Europe and US mapping.

Alternatively, 'Serial_Fiat_Owner' could get the newer Go720 for £119.99 (£137.99 Inc VAT) and just buy a Texas map?

Cheapest of all would be a TomTom ONE "3rd Edition" with European Maps for £64.99 (£74.74 Inc VAT) and an add-on Texas Map

(All prices from TotalPDA - there may be cheaper deals elsewhere).

EDIT: I just looked and there isn't a Texas only map any more, but the 'US - South Central Region' covers Texas and is only £29.99 inc VAT direct from the TomTom website.

By the way, 'Serial_Fiat_Owner'... I used to be one too.... but there *are* places you can get help and treatment! Laughing

Tomtom 1 V3 and Texas maps sounds like a cheap and simple option - when I'd looked at maps before they seemed very expensive.

Is there reason why everybody has told me to buy a refurbished TomTom and gone very quiet on the subject of Garmin??

What are you not saying here?...

PS - Have been getting advice on the Serial Fiat Ownership problem, but mostly from a Citroen dealer (Fiat make great wee cars but terrible bigs ones & I need a people carrier/estate) - I'm not sure that's actually gonna be any kind of improvement though!

As for why we are suggesting refurbished models....
simply because they are some of the best models TomTom ever made and they aren't selling them any more. The new low-end models don't have such good facilities and the high-end ones are too expensive!

As for why no-one has suggested a Garmin.... Don't know.
I don't like them much myself, but that's purely personal, probably just because I got a TomTom first and it's what I'm used to.

If you go down the Garmin path, open source maps are avalible. This is obviously the cheapest way for maps, but I can't comment on how good they are.

Another option for the odd holiday is online navigation. Theres now Java based apps providing free navigation world wide (funded from advertisements). The data charges can add up, depending on you phone plan and espcially if you are roaming, but worth investigation.

I think the refurb'd older units are a good way to for bang for $$$, but make sure you know the price and avalibilty of maps before committing to a particular unit. More than one person has been disappointed by the lack of, or expense of, maps upgrades.
