I got stuck in an almighty traffic jam on Sunday. The M23 turned into a very large car park for at least an hour. Whether or not a traffic information system would have been able to react in time to stop me getting caught, I don't know.

I found that the Garmin GTM-25 should be compatible with my Nuvi 255.

I am struggling to find some decent reviews though, especially from people who have used one in the UK.

Has anyone here used a GTM-25, and how good is the traffic information system? Would it be worth an extra £50 to get one of these things?

It depends...

There are two main things to consider....

1 Reception. In the UK we are blessed (cursed?) with low power RDS-TMC braodcast signals - so to get reasonable reception in most places you need to connect it to an external aerial.

2 Information. This is down to the supplier. GARMIN have a tie up with the RAC-TrafficMaster system - I never had any problems when I was running my 660 with a GTM-21 connected to the car aerial.

Have a look at the info in the TMC forum for ways to connect to external aerials and other people's thoughts. Theer are extensive postings in there.

Sounds like I should steer clear of them then, because my car (Jaguar X-Type) doesn't have a proper external aerial, I believe it uses the rear screen demister wires as an FM antenna. I also cannot get to the back of the radio to connect into it anyway, as it is one of those built-into-the-dash setups.

You could always use an external mag-mount aerial Laughing

My Garmin nuvi 670T has had a problem since day one of getting a reliable signal. Despite contact with Garmin support - put the aerial across the bottom of the screen, the problem still occurs. However, contacting the main dealership for the car - Citroen C5 - they state that the screen has a UV coating to prevent the car from 'heating' up due to UV rays - an isothermic coating. Hence no signal. The solution - to put the aerial behind the rear view mirror on the windscreen where it's not coated or connect it to the car aerial system. So, that's my next task to get the traffic reports to work.
