|
|
Hello all
Bought a TT920 a while ago and liked it plenty although I never really used the remote or the voice for the FM transmitter etc etc, just point to point really
I did install Australia maps though and did drive in France and will again
Sadly it vanished mysteriously in an Australian underground car park, sigh
I'm thinking of buying a 720 or 520 or suchlike on the grounds that they'll do what I need and cost less next time I lose it
What am I giving up by moving down? I like the flat profile, big screen and touch screen and speed, I suspect I like the hard rive too for extra maps? Don't do mp3 etc etc
Is it perfectly simple to just stick an 8MB expansion card in the 520/720 in place of a HD?
Wanted to buy a new one here in Brisbane but they only seem to have 720s in stock for 250GBP and upwards, think I'll tough it out for the last week. Looking at about 180GBP on ebay for a newTT920
Many thanks for any tips |

About the only things missing will be the EPT, that’s the gyro system for predicting where you are when the GPS signal disappears (in tunnels etc) and less built in memory. If you still have the remote control it will work fine with any of the other models iin the x20/ x30 range.
You can use SDHC memory cards with the x20/ x30 devices to make more storage space available. If you want to use the SD card for maps stick to 4GB, if its only for music/ pictures you can use anything up to 32GB although the largest available AFAIK at the moment is 16GB - Mike |

a simple as that?
all that dough for the HD and EPT?
and I can add 4GB using a card for peanuts?
blimey
not sure why I went for the 920 in hindsight
so a 520 will effectively do what the 920 did for me then?
many thanks |

Well the other big difference is the maps you get....
In the UK, on a 920 you would have had UK+Eire, Europe and also the US.
On a 720 you get UK+Eire and Europe
On a 520 you get UK + Eire
Not sure what you get on an Aussie one, but it must be less as otherwise the hardware is so similar. |

seen a forum post elsewhere that the 520 couldn't 'do' other maps, in this case Australia
is that for real? don't sound it ...
my depqrted 920 ran australia perfectly, there's no reason why the 520 wouldn't run it is there?
or france?
I can't see how they justify the additonal cost of the 920 and 720 |

I seem to recall there is a difference with the Aussy spec x20 units in that they are fitted with less built in memory, there is some information about this on the TT web site if you select your location to Àus then look at the hardware - Mike |

Reading this, am I to assume that if I want to put The PGSW Speed Camera Database on my TT 920, it has enough memory capacity built-in or do I need an SD card, if so, what size and type ??
Many thanks. |

You will have more than enough space for the peed Camera files on the device as they are very small in file size, the POI files have to reside in the map folder which is using internal memory.
If at some future point you want an SD card anything upto 4GB (including SDHC types) will be fine for music/ maps etc. Above 4GB you can only use them for music, the limit is 32GB although I am not too sure if cards of this capacity are available as yet - Mike |

A point that may be perhaps worth mentioning is that it would appear that the SDHC cards are considerably slower than the SD cards particularly the high speed ones, the max speed for SDHC cards are class 6 which i think represents x 6 against the std SD card, i may be wrong on this because i havent looked in depth, but certainly my 8gb is slower than my 2gb x133 SD card, also dont know how this compares to hard disks speed, I have also noticed a couple of places now selling 32gb cards, one i think is play.com.
Just thought it worth a mention. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |

Interesting, I hadn't heard that....
But if the main use is in the UK (and a UK device is purchased) there's plenty of room for the W+CE map and the camera POIs etc. and the Australia map could either be put on a card or if that DOES prove to be slow (I haven't heard anyone else say it's an issue) then you could temporarily remove the Europe map and relpace it with the Aussie one on the internal memory. |

Set your location to Aus and take a look at the device specifications, seems strange so it could be a typo but I think I read somewhere the Aus units have less memory:
720 Aus = 512MB of built in Flash
720T Aus = 2GB of built in Flash (still not avail though)
930 = 4GB of built in Flash
It would appear the 720 Aus unit is the same as we Europeans would know as the 520? - Mike |

Presume you are talking cards Andy, I only raised it for awareness and can only speak from my own experience comparing my SD x 133 against my 8gb SDHC Using TTN6, I do not know the speed of the SDHC because it is unmarked and only cost about £14 so pobably low class, from a quick search it would appear that this issue if it is one is beginning to be discussed quite a lot with varing opinions it would appear that the the New SDHC cards spec covers more for Sustained Data Rate on writing for video etc than speed on reading, I cannot claim to be knowledgeble on the subject, but as i say speak from my own findings,
quote from one item:
Quote: | Consumers can get the best performance value out of their digital products by using flash memory cards that support the device's highest standards for data transfer speed. The SD specification 2.00 calls for cards to be classified according to the minimal sustained DTS as follows:
* Class 2: minimum sustained DTS of 2MB/sec (13x Speed)
* Class 4: minimum sustained DTS of 4MB/sec (26x Speed)
* Class 6: minimum sustained DTS of 6MB/sec (40x Speed)
