After 5 years of my not so trusty Navman, I've invested in a Nuvi 760.

However, I'm a little concerned as there's no CD's in the box, and when I try to register the product, the serial number on the box, doesn't "match" my unit....

So, should there have been a CD in the box (I always thought Garmins came with the desktop route planning software). If not, how do I back up my maps etc, and secondly, has anyone else had a similar problem registering their unit on the Garmin website ?

Steve

You're likely entering the wrong number. The ser# is the very tiny type on the slanted lip above the power strip, back of the unit. Yeah, dumb place and not very obvious. . .

To backup the unit just create a new folder on your PC and copy the entire contents of the Nuvi to this folder. It'll take 45 -50 minutes... Then burn that to a DVD.

Thanks guys....

So, I have the serial number, which has been accepted, and the system identifies it as a Nuvi 7 series, so I get:

You have connected : nüvi 7 Series, software version: 2.70

To register your device, you must update its operating software. Please review the software license agreement below, and click the checkbox to accept.

Next, click Download to Device.

But when I do this, it goes back to the screen above, and the "Next" button is greyed out....

Any ideas ??

Steve

My nuvi 8 series did the same when registering.

Instead, I 'manually' updated it's firmware to the latest version from http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp

This seemed to do the trick and it then registered fine.

Probably better to use WebUpdater as it'll also check for updates to Bluetooth and Traffic software - Click here

Agreed. But Webupdater does not work until until unit is initially registered. Which is where things seem to be failing.

I found that once I had upgraded the firmware manually, it would successfully register with Garmin. From here on in Webupdater works fine and is quite rightly what I'd use after for all the other subsequent updates.

I have never had to register any of my Garmin Units (i3, 660 or 760) on the MyGarmin site to use Webupdater - wonder if this is something new for the 860 so that each user is "forced" to register their unit at the time of purchase

You may be right there actually...

Thanks guys...

I downloaded the file and then it went through the registration process.

Now I just need to work out how to do a couple of things with it:

On my old Navman, I could zoom in to a point on the map, press and hold it, and get the option to "Navigate To" or Save". I'd like to be able to do something similar by saving a point on the map as a favourite. Is this possible on the 760 ?

Can I arrange my favourites in any particular order ?

Any help gratefully received Laughing

Thanks,
Steve
