I want to connect a Garmin etrex venture cx to an Ipaq 4700. The GPS has a mini usb port which I use to connect to a PC to upload/download memory map data and I would like to do the same to the Ipaq.
The problem is that the Ipaq doesnt have a usb port as it uses Bluettooth.
It does a have an Activesync cable which I connect using a usb to a PC to transfer data.
Is it possible to do the same to the Ipaq? The same problem also applies to connecting a camera to the Ipaq, again unless its Bluetooth.
Surly there must be a way round this, otherwise the Ipaq is completely useless to me.

You might be better looking at using a Bluetooth GPS receiver with the iPAQ which even though the 4700 is a few years old it is still a very capable device with VGA screen etc. Have a look at This Thread, decent Bluetooth GPS units can be bought for under £20 these days!
What software are you intending running on the iPAQ that needs the GPS data though?
As for the digital camera can you not take the card out of the camera and put it into the card slot on the iPAQ? - connecting USB fed devices to a PDA is not impossible but the 4700 has a serial port and will not act as a USB host controller so its not easy (read costly) - Mike

Thanks for that, yes I presume I can transfer the camera card to the Ipaq to solve that problem.

My real concern is the inability that the GPS/Ipaq cant communicate.
I run memory map on the Ipaq and when at the caravan I want to create walking routes and be able to download them onto the Venture Cx gps, which is a tough GPS ideal for walking.
I dont know much about Bluetooth but is it possible to plug a Bluetooth dongle into the gps's usb port, using a converter to convert the standard usb thats on dongles to a mini usb used on the gps.

trying it on all sites, ah? Laudable, but you can't bend physics. I already told you it's not possible.

Bluetooth GPS receiver and an Otter Box for the 4700 and you will have a very good solution for going walking, the OS maps are in a class of their own compared to the Garmin, and the Otter Box will offer a waterproof tough enclosure preventing damage to the PDA - Mike

Thanks for the otter/bluetooth gps info but the Garmin Etrex was a recent 50th birthday present so I cant really dump it for another one with Bluetooth. I will just carry on doing what I do now and make as many walks up as possible on the home PC and upload the walks to the GPS before leaving. In the future I might buy a cheap laptop that will have a usp port.

As for the Ipaq, the useless thing will probably end up on Ebay, Thankfully I didnt pay much for it as it was second hand, the previous user (also a walker) said he never used it, now I know why!

Yes Lutz, some of us Brits are very stubborn and will not give up until all avenues are investigated. Someone somewhere might have a fix and the challange is to find that person. Even if it all ends up in dead end, at least I have learnt things on the way from yourself and others, so thanks for that.

In the meantime I will continue with my quest, mind you it sounds easier to go to the moon.

Just for the record would I also need a blue tooth printer to work with the Ipaq?

The link below might be a fix for the problem but I have to say I'm not totally convinced, mainly because I don't quite understand it all.

no, that link is for a serial port (which you etrex doesn't seem to have as you said)
