Yes, in this instance you can wire directly if using a TomTom cradle.

The transformer (12v down to 5v) is in the TomTom PDA cradle.

Do NOT do this with any other lead that plugs directly into your PDA, or any other device. They are typically expecting 5v.

Its usually pretty obvious which cigarette adaptors have transformers in as they will be slightly bulkier, and usually have an output voltage and max current sticker on them.

The fuse is currently in the cigarette adaptor plug. You should really seek a 'barrel' style fuseholder, also known as an in-line holder. Try halfords or similar.

Snip the plug off, split the wires, and wire them into a mini terminal block. Wire the inline fuse between this and your PDA cradle.

Now either solder two wires to the back of the cigarette lighter socket (part of your car electrics) or splice into each supply wire and connect to the other side of the terminal block.

You've now created a fused spur off the cigarette lighter supply. The fuse that you use should be the same as the one in the supplied adaptor/plug. It will be much lower rating than the supply to the cig lighter. This is so you won't be able to light cigars off your pda before it blows!
