I am a long time user of Tomtom (and before that Palmtop NL) software on PocketPC (and Psion).

Looks like I will have to switch to the Go series to get the latest technology.
I think the IQ routes and HD traffic will be particularly useful for me.

I have looked on the Tomtom website and on these forums but I have not been able to find a simple description of the difference between the 5xx, 7xx and 9xx series. I can't believe this is not documented somewhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

I know that HD traffic is not available yet (in the UK).
Presumably if I were to buy a 930 (or 730 or 530 when they come out) I could transfer my current GPRS traffic subscription to that, and then upgrade to HD when it comes out. I realise that will probably cost a bit more than waiting for the new x30 HD package to come out.
I am assuming that the x30 series will require the new HD cable with built in GPRS. Is that correct?
Or will there be x30s with the GPRS built in that do not require any add-ons?

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give

The x30 device do not have any GPRS capability built in, they rely upon a mobile phone connection via Bluetooth for this.

The HD receiver is somewhat different but the UK doesn't have this capabilty at present, the HD receiver for the mainland Europe countries covered might contain a SIM card and have GPRS conectivity within it, but I have never seen inside one to know if this is true. For the time being you have to make do with the RDS-TMC Device in the UK for traffic reception or use the mobile phones GPRS service and the associated TomTom Plus subscription system.

5xx is Regional specific i.e. UK + ROI
7xx is Full Western Europe
9xx is Full Western Europe + USA + EPT (gyro for position in tunnels)

As for transfering any subscription to a different service, only TomTom support could offer advice on that one - Mike

i see a certain online outlet selling the HD unit for £116.
As you say Mike it's not here yet.
Perhaps said outlet should put a note on their ad along the lines of what countries it is up and running in.
I thought these units were going to be in the region of £60.
But this is the UK, where we pay double for everything.

Just did a search and found one at £116 and one at £58.74
That is a ridiculous disparity. Are they guessing at what the final price will be?

Agreed Mike it is a bit rude eh.
Perhaps someone should explain the BOGOF system to them.
They seem to think it's Buy One Pay For Two.

EPT - useful occasionally
Additional maps - could be useful at some stage although no plans to use

Seems like most of the price difference is down to the number of maps

Just found a website which lists some features.
Can you confirm that 500 does not have text to speech, 700 and 900 do?
Are all screen sizes the same?

Found a button to click on the My Tomtom web pages to remove the Plus features from one device so that you can re-register with another device, so that is definitely OK.

The 910 was the first Device to offer TTS legally. Earlier Devices could be made to use it, but the software was then re-written to prohibit this.

The screen sizes have increased with the newer models, but each of them in the same release have been the same size, with the x20 and x30 being 4.3".

Check Here and Here for more details.

The 510 doesn't have TTS. The 520 does and presumably the 530 does.
Ditto for the 710, 720, and 730.

Of the x10 series only the 910 has it.

Yes there are lots of differences, but it's one hell of a job to specify absolutely everything, in a forum reply.

There are reviews of most devices on this site, done as each model or range was released. They will tell you what changes there were, if you are prepared to do a little research yourself. Look HERE or click on "GPS Reviews" at the top of the page.

If you want to venture further afield:
HERE is a good product list, and
HERE is a comparison feature that lets you choose three models to compare.
