Ive just bought an R.A.C sat nav to tied me over till I can afford a more expensive one.

Just a quick question about Poi,s Ive transfered some pois to the memory card via a card reader, the unit displays the category and the icon for the pois. but It wont find anything from the files ive transfered.

The format is in .csv which are the same as the ones already on the card.

these .csv files work fine on my garmin vista cx

any ideas peeps

Carl

I wasn't aware that the RAc device could accommodate custom POIs?

Hi Darren,

I read on an r.a.c web site how to put custom speed cams on the unit these are also in .csv format thats why i thought it would work.

It did mention somthing about having to use a clean memory card though and not the one that comes with the unit.

I thought the .csv file would have all the info the unit would need. The unit does recognize the file but still cant get it working.

None of the manuals for the RAC range Click Here mention how to install 3rd party POIs or that you even do it.

Ah OK, that's good to know. Not sure what else to add, do you have a link to the instructions the RAC posted on installing custom speed cameras? That may help me understand what's involved.

Have a read through the instructions on This Page, it details installing the Pocket GPS World Speed Camera database and spoken alerts on Route 66 based devices, which the RAC device is. It should give you a few clues - Mike

PaulB2005 & mikealder,

Those links do help thanks peeps.

I thought it would only be a matter of copying the .csv files to the card looks like too good to be true.

Cheers dudz

RAC SatNav does take .csv format POI files. Best to use something like POIEdit to change them to NavMan .csv files. They work no trouble. I have found though that as there is only limited space on the original SD, if you install 'too many' POI files, it can cause problems.

The limitation seems to be not the number of categories, but the total number of actual POI's you put on the card. The shopping/supermarket category is one to avoid

Thanks for the info guys,

I do use the .csv file format when putting onto the card.

here is an example, I use my Garmin Vista CX for mountain walking which is flawless. So i have found some pois called UK MOUNTAINS these are in .csv format and they copy to the card without problem, the RAC unit even shows them in the poi list it shows the icon and the name of the pois ie UK MOUNTAINS. But when i try and find any I get no search results. The reason I would like these on my RAC unit is my job is a mountain leader and I find the hardest part of the bloody job is the drive to find the mountains. i was hoping the RAC unit could get me near enough ie the nearest road. Then Id use the Garmin to do the rest.

Any tips guys
Cheers Carl

This is a slightly different problem, as the mountain summit is a long way away from the nearest road the navigation unit cannot compute a route to it.
What you should do is move the POI to the nearest road where you park your car, this way it should then be able to work out the required route - Mike
