Sorry this is long and OT (or maybe OTT).
I have 2 vehicles, and have been using a Medion MDPPC250 for some years with its original software plus the German stuff that announces POI's. I bought a Garmin 310 for the second vehicle and it may be me but I really find it much poorer. I use audible POI warnings and directions and find I don't like looking at a screen while driving.
Then last week, the Medion lady's voice went, becoming too distorted to listen to. Thinking it might be the speaker inside the Medion, I bought a second pair of spares or repair ones off ebay and have built a working one of the two and tried a replacement speaker in my old one. Sadly it didn't help, so it must be a capacitor or a chip, which makes repair too difficult.

But, the now-working repaired one has TomTom 5 loaded, so I thought I'd like to try that before starting again. So here are the questions. I've installed Tomtom software to the computer (Vista). I seem to be able to backup the voices off the SD card to the PC although the operation seems terribly slow, but the system seems to hang if I try to copy the maps. The pda also seems to have downloaded and installed an update from the Tomtom site.
Then when I stick this pda in the car, it doesn't seem to find the aerial which, of course, is the one that came with the Medion software/hardware combination. The seller has no info on what worked before as he had been collecting these bits himself.
Am I wasting my time with all this? It would be useful to know how the Tomtom software would work compared with the Garmin and the Medion Navteq. If so, would a 2gig SD card from Tesco (the cheapest I can find) work in the Medion pda so that I can load the Medion software and see what works without blowing away the Tomtom stuff?
