Nuvi 250 & POI

I have just purchsed a nuvi 250, after reading a couple of posts i want to check before i load up some POI. I have read that you cant put on more than 257 catagories into the nuvi or it will lock, is this an extra 257 as the nuvi already comes with some poi already in. I have also read you can get round this by placing poi onto a sd card & running them from there not loading into the unit, does this work & can somebody please tell me how you do this if it does work.
