If you mean how are lat/long entered on the Device, it depends on how you have set your Preferences in Set Units. It can be Decimal Degrees (d.d), Degrees and Decimal Minutes (d m.m) or Degrees Minutes Seconds (d m s).

If you mean in a POI then it is always in Decimal Degree Format, with Longitude, Latitude, Name.

West, and South, are denoted by Minus Degrees.

There is no difference in the Value, only in the User Interface of the Value.

Longitude 000.3650 (Decimal Degrees) is the same as 000 21' 54" (Degrees Minutes Seconds).

Correct - as in "Six of one, half a dozen of the other" (no difference in the value, nine is either treble three or three squared, some of us understand either way - not me, I hasten to add, I'm too thick for all that stuff!!).

The Decimal way is one way of giving Lat/Long, the Degrees and decimal Minutes way is another and Degrees Mins Secs is yet another. Different way of presenting the details, but they both result in the same dot (value) on the map.

Why on earth am I trying to comment here? I haven't the faintest idea how any of them work, I simply pick up the figures from my TomTom and they work - thank God for the smart spider inside! Now, give me a cross reference from an Ordnance map and I'll find the place unerringly, but Lat/Long, forget it! (And please don't anybody try to explain it to me - pearls amongst swine where I'm concerned).

In other words, YOU don't have to be clever enough to do the maths to convert from one method to another, just set up the preferences in the TomTom to use the layout you want to enter.

If you DO want to know more, there's a co-ordinate convertor website HERE

For the Latitude/Longitude section of THAT website, it says (when you expand it by clicking on the header), "You can enter decimals under any of the above boxes,
to cope with DDD.DDDDD° or DDD° MM.MMM'
or DDD° MM' SS.S" type coordinates."

Just for Dennis...

There's 360 degrees in a circle... (and therefore in the compass).
Each degree can be divided up into tenths, hundredths and thousandths.... giving the 51.508333 format.

In a different way of thinking, each degree can be divided up into 60 "minutes" and each "minute" can be divided up into 60 "seconds"...
giving the 51° 30' 30'' format.

And just to make things difficult, someone came up with a sort of mix of the two ways of thinking; using degrees, minutes and tenths of minutes...
giving the 51° 30.500' format.

Where it all goes pear-shaped is when it gets written down badly, especially when people can't find or remember the right symbols on their computers!

But I'm sure he knows all about it really!

'Course I do, Confused Confused Oink, Oink. Easy Peasy. So, in other words for the less continent among us, when I'm at 46.38721, I'm at about eight and a half minutes past. But whilst on my keyboard I have a couple of blobs like this ; and a couple like this : and a couple like this " and a couple like this =, I can't find one like this º. That's dead annoying! Evil or Very Mad

Except that your example gives an accuracy to within one millionth of a degree or about 4.3776 inches of latitude. (I have approximated one deg Lat = 60 nm (By olde worlde definition) and 1 nautical mile = 6080 feet) (and I have stuck to imperial as Lat don't work too well in km). I suspect this is rather more accurate than the average GPS can measure your actual position. Very Happy
Oh! and a compass is a thingy with two legs witha spikey thingy at the end of one leg and a pencilly thingy at the end of the other. Damn fine device for drawing circular compass roses Twisted Evil

Don't worry!! I already knew all that and wrongturn has clearly sussed it out now. All's well that lives in glass houses full of moss stitchers.

Well it's better than the Camera submission map that goes to 14 decimals! I started off just using random numbers, but then thought people would complain that 51.12345º deg didn't equal 51º 30' 30" or whatever, so used a co-ordinates conversion site (http://www.nearby.org.uk) and just copy and pasted.

So what's the thing I take out walking then? I didn't draw it! Cool
