TomTom 520 overspeed alert.

I've bought a TT 520 and set it to warn when going faster than speed allowed. I expected it to warn when about 2 mph above, but I have to be going at about 10 mph above before it kicks in, which is useless. Does anyone know if there is an adjustment I am missing? My mate says his kicks in at 2 mph overspeed.

There is no adjustment, and you shouldn't rely on it.

The truth of the matter is that a lot of roads don't have the Speed Data assigned to them, and even with those that do, some are incorrect.

mine varies a bit but it always seems to kick in around 3 to 8 miles above tomtom speed ( i think will have to check exactly next time i go out Embarassed

) which is ok as the cops allow for variation anyway

Oldboy, I never said anything about relying on it. I was questioning the accuracy.
The double post must be due to AOL disconnecting me when I clicked "submit". I therefor assumed that it had not been submitted - nothing intentional.

True, we shouldn't rely on it for accuracy; and in reality that could be said for sat navs themselves, as there's no substiitute for using your head when driving. Nevertheless, I think the speed warning is (or at least has the potential to be) a useful tool to nudge me in those careless moments of exceeding the limit.

Mine varies in its warnings - sometimes when I'm 3 miles over, sometimes up to 8, sometimes never.

John, - I am curious as to which speed you are referring.
Are you comparing the audio warning with the car speedometer or the GPS indicated road speed?
As we all know the car speedometers are always optimistic and can be quite inaccurate.
I have just bought a 520 after a few years with a 300... I like the feel of this new one and will see what speed mine bongs at...

JMK, I am referring to the "warn when over speed allowed". The GPS speed showing to the left of the speed limit for that particular road. I would have thought it an easy task for TomTom to compare the two numbers, and when the left hand one exceeded the right hand one, trigger the alarm. Looks like it doesnt do it that way, and relies on the GPS information which takes some time. Yesterday it was 5 mph above before it triggered. I think satellite reception will have an effect on it and will vary according to cloud cover etc. Obviously it is difficult (not to say dangerous) to test, and there is only one place locally I can do it, where the road info on the TomTom is out of synch with reallity.
It is only a minor niggle with an otherwise nice piece of kit, and I do not rely on it, its just nice to know mine works to the same degree as everyone elses.

Surely, if you drove at at steady 70, it wouldnt be bonging at all, as you are not exceeding the limit. If it triggered at 72, that would be ok, but more than that starts to render the feature useless. My Talex warns at 2 mph over the limit accross various speed limits without any trouble, no lee-way involved.

Hi there,

You need to be aware of the following, which hasn't been mentioned yet:-

There ARE TWO speed warning functions on the V7 software, which are;

WARN WHEN OVER SPEED LIMIT- This is using the map data +4/5/6 mph over etc. and-
WARN WHEN EXCEEDING MAX SPEED. - This is a VALUE YOU SET (e.g is it set to 10?).

In this instance you will probably find the second (i.e. Max speed) is currently set at 10 MPH. Personally I have this set at 30 MPH (for urban use). No need to keep watching if TT has the correct speed limits.

If you change this value to 71/72 MPH it'll only come in on the motorways etc.

Try this. It could b the setting you've missed. Thumbs Up
