what are the latest version of maps & what is the latest firmware?

Garmin sell quite a lot of different maps  If you mean European maps, the answer is V9 - North American are V2008.
Re: firmware - best best is to download WebUpdater and let it do it the checking for you:

EDIT: Just noticed this post on GPSPassion. It seems City Navigator Europe V2008 is shipping on some units - even if not yet released as a separate product. |

Thanks - reason I ask is because after buying my unit yestersay from PC World, as I turned it on I got a message saying the maps are over 1 year old & need updating.
I find this starnge on a brand new unit. |
