OK guys, when I'm reading the UK sites ang mags, all the prices are generally without VAT. In other parts of Europe all the prices generally includes the VAT. I think TomTom shows also the sterling prices VAT included. Wink
Eh? The VAT is irrelevant because it's applied to both the discounted and undiscounted price. For example, without VAT:

Price undiscounted = £60, price discounted = £30, discount = 50%

with VAT of any amount, assume UK 17.5%:

Price undiscounted = £70.50, price discounted = £35.25, discount = 50%

You are right, the VAT has nothing to do with the discount.

Good on you Bazzaa. Just mailed them something similar as well. Think false advertising is disgusting and like yourself will not hesitate to take them to trading standards.

Let's hope that they honour their advert and keep things simple.

Good luck m8!

The Euro prices and discounts are a little bit different and depend on map type (version 7.10 or the latest):
- the regional maps: Great Britain & Ireland, France, Italy, Eastern Europe, Canada & Alaska, the parts of USA etc.
-- 59,95 € 39,95 € 33,36 %
- the areal maps has prices and discounts of their own:
-- Western Europe 99,95 € 49,95 € 50,03 %
-- Northern America 109,95 € 49,95 € 54,57 %
-- South Africa 99,95 € 49,95 € 50,03 %
-- Australia 199,95 € 89,95 € 55,01 %
-- Hongkong 39,95 € 19,95 € 50,06 %
-- Singapore 39,95 € 19,95 € 50,06
-- Western & Central Europe (GO920) 109,95 € 59,95 € 45,48 %
There is a clear advantage for Euro countries (I couldn't resist Laughing)
The bigger are cheaper than the smaller. Why? Rolling Eyes

Has anyone factored in the £/€ exchange rate has actually dropped...

The other week it was €1,39 to £1, now it's around the €1,33 to £1.

This will have an effect albeit small one.

Hi all

I am really looking forward to seeing the latest reply to Bazzas latest e-mail using Andys figures.

I do not think the euro/pound debate is relevant . If TT send advertising e-mails to their UK customers offering a 50 % discount , then that is what we should get. End of story.

This is blatantly illegal advertising - anyone know how to contact trading standards in Holland ??

Is it? If you get answer from marketing they say that is was
- misunderstanding in support
- human error in support
In most this kind of cases, the customer is always wrong, unfortunately. Crying or Very sad

Hi,

I'm looking at going to France soon and was just going to buy the france map. Then I received the discount email and wondered if the western europe map which inc's uk & france would be better?

My main worry is whether this western europe map will contain as much detail as the individual country maps?

Thanks Matti

In general - Yes
There may be minor differences in detail of drawing (more straight lines than curves etc). Please see other recent posts on the same subject for more discussion.

Sorry Hartsa but adverising has to be honest to be legal. In this case TomTom know the advertising is blatantly not true.

OK, the fact is they may have made a mistake (in which case they should admit it and change the advertising) and I know they cannot be forced to sell goods at the promised price.

Personally I would be happy if they would stop treating me (and Bazza) like idiots. If they have gone to the trouble of creating a generic reply (I got exactly the same first response as Bazza) we can't be the only ones upset at beang treated in this way.

I am thier client - and I expect them to be honest - thats all there is to it.

Advertising "must" be honest. TomTom has on their pages: the introduction offer of up to 50% discount. That is advertising, an email from one person from support to one or two customers is not. It is a human error (if there is mistakes). The world is cruel. Confused

Up to 50% discount, in some cases that is not true, because you get more than 50% discount.
As mentioned on these pages many times, the knowledge of the TT support is as it is. Anybody could not trust literally what they say or write (errare humanum est). Sad

It seems to me that the banner ad on the home page IS misleading, and I have made a formal complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency.

Will keep you up-to-date with the outcome.

Hartsa - firstly the e-mail is from marketing not support, and secondly the e-mail promotion must have gone to thousands of customers - not one or two. It is very clear and unambiguous - no mention of "up to 50%", "50% average" or anything else other than 50% off.

The only section of the website which mentions "up to 50% off" is one which would not even be seen by someone accepting the offer - and even that refers to a map WHICH IS available apparently for 50% off - except when I try to buy it in UK Pounds IT IS NOT!!!!

Its nothing to do with tax or exchange rates - both affect both undiscounted and discounted prices equally (being percentages themselves).

They are lying to us - and thats only cruel if we let them get away with it.

Latest reply from TomTom:

Dear Mr......
Once again, we wish to inform you that TomTom have approximately 25 maps for sale in our new map shop at an average 50% discounted price. The actual discounted price depends on the particular map that you decide to purchase. Due to the difference in discounted prices we have made both the original and the discounted price clearly visible on the map shop pages so that the actual price is known in advance, before any purchase has been made.

Me:
Dear TomTom Support,
Once again, I wish to inform you that you have not answered my question. Your maps are NOT on sale at a 50% discounted price. Neither are your maps are on sale at an "average" 50% discounted price. You lied to me in your email offering me a map update with a 50% discount that is not available and you are lying to me now. It is NOT an average discount of 50%. I am well aware of the original and discounted price. That's how I know that you are not giving me 50% discount. To clarify things for you, 50% discount is half price. Are you going to honour your email offer to me and sell me a map update at half price?

What are the odds on them telling me yet again that it is an average discount of 50%??
