Tomtom or Garmin for South Africa

I would like to buy my son who lives in South Africa a GPS system when he comes to visit me for Christmas.
I personally think there is not much to choose between Tomtom and Garmin - they are both good, with different strong points. The real issue is maps, and specifically the coverage of South Africa.
Garmin maps for South Africa cost about twice as much as Tomtom maps for Southern Africa (a much larger region).
How good is the coverage of the TomTom maps? Do the Garmin maps have better coverage? If anybody has any experience, I would like to hear your thoughts. Or if another product is better in your mind, I would like you to tell me.
