Has anyone with a x970T (V7) managed to sign upto the 2 year ViaMichelin Advantage Map updates. It seems that it's not available for version 7 devices (or is the website out of date). The web form only has version 6 software as an option.

I suspect it maybe because v7 has the latest maps so they wouldn't have any V7 map update DVD's. I would check back in a few weeks when the software DVD's go on sale.

now that you are back hope all is ok at vm i hsave posted this query on other posts but maybe you can help
is ther any way your advice to your software people could help me
its all about the size of your fonts on the navigation bar telling you what road you are on and most important the next road you require
they are both so small that you can hardly see them you get a large white box and in the centre they put ie A34 so small and in green and orange maybe just black would help
also the motorway sign posts are the same i think this is the only downfall on such a good system 980t
i know it tells you to take the roads in text to speech but as a coach driver i never have the sound up so not to irritate the passengers so i rely on the visual side of it
thanks kelvin

Hi Stu,

While you're asking the techie's about increasing the font size... Could you also ask them to put an option to enter a house number after the postcode search, like the search by address mode. This would prevent the unit from selecting a random house number in a street when using the postcode search. I think this request might have been asked already... it would make the unit even more user-freindly.

I used the unit on some comlex routes today and it's awesome! 100% correct, I'm glad I bought this now. Very Happy

Hi Bertie100 - in the Postcode section of the user manual (4.1.1.1) it gives an option for house number - doesn't this work?

I don't see this in the V7 manual. The town search allows you to search by town, then street, then house number. The postcode search just takes you to some random house on the street with no option to specify the extact house number/name.

I can only get to the "house number" option if I use the town search, not the postcode search... hmm

Embarassed D'oh, sorry about that Bertie100 - all that time reading the manual I downloaded from the website when I thought I was getting info on version 7 models seems to have been a waste of time!! (The old manual is obviously what I got, though there's no indication in it as to which version it is).

As an almost ex-Garmin user, this certainly seems like a retrograde step if the road location given really is random - and area codes on the continent, for instance, often cover a much wider area than in England, so I imagine the problem could be worse there. Confused I'll now read the proper manual in the next couple of days to find out if there are any other problems like this.

HI Guys

This issue is a Tele Atlas one. TA only map certain house numbers on each road...so if you look at a particular street you might see that no 10, no 40 and no 60 are mapped.
What some systems do is let you put in the house number but will then guide you to the nearest mapped number on the street. So if you put in no 73 it will guide you to the closest mapped house which is 60.
What ours does is takes you to the start or finish of that post code area which could be one of the houses from lets say 20-40. Thats what it does if the road is shorter and only a few houses are mapped.
If its a long road and more houses are mapped and they fall between diffent post codes then it will offer the street number as an option.
It effectively takes you to exactly the same point but doesnt fool you by offering to take you to a house number which isnt mapped...

Hope this is clear

Cheers

Stu

Hi Stu,

Thanks for the info... I still think there should be an option somewhere to enter the house number when doing a postcode search (or at least some way of refining it later via a menu).

I was trying to find a house in High Wycombe yesterday, so I typed in the postcode... It took me to the street fine, but It was a massive street and went around a bend (I thought I was lost). I then used the town search, street, then house number and it took me to the door step of the house I wanted (rather than crawling along the street trying to find the house number - not great if your doing this at night time).

If you were able to enter the house number after the postcode (as an option, if the house number is known), I think it would be an improvement. Even if TA does not have house number you require, it could take you the closest one... for example, I live in a new block of flats (no 58 on the street). The TA maps go to 54... It would be more useful if the X970 took me to no 54 rather the house no1 or no22.

What do other people think?

Hi Bertie - I too raised this question a few days ago.
Quote:
The 970 only gives the town initialy and if you accept this, it goes straight ahead and calculates the route to a default house number in the correct road, but no option that I can see to input a house number. The only way I have found to enter a house number is to avoid the postcode function and manually enter the town, then the street and then finally the house number.

Stu's reply with explanation from VM Tech (thank you Stu) only partially answers the question.
Here are the anomalies:
Testing my 970T (new edition V7) for a few days has shown that if I take the extra time and effort to program an address using the "Town" option (enter town then street then house number) then you do arrive outside the correct house. If you change the house number by say 2 houses, you are moved down the road 2 houses. So in practice (probably by interpolation?) the capability does exist with TeleAtlas maps, to take you very accurately to a specific house number, or so close as to make no practical difference.

HOWEVER If I program the destination using the alternative "Post Code" option, after entering the full 6 fig post code, only the town is displayed - it could and should logically display the road name. No option is given to select a house number. Accepting the offered town jumps straight to the unit navigating to a default house in the previously unconfirmed but correct road.

With respect Stu, it seems clear to me there is a programming problem.

Use of the "Town" option repeatedly demonstrates that "in practice" the capability to navigate to, or extremely close to a specific house does exist.
I suggest the " TeleAtlas" issue is a red herring.
I appreciate that you can only pass on the info you are given, but in this case I believe your Tech people have gone off at a tangent.

The potentially quick and simple postcode option needs re-programming to achieve its full capability.
ie enter postcode - be offered road - when confirmed offer house number input option.

This would be about 10 times quicker than the laborious "Town" option.

Well thats strange as I also have a Blaupunkt Lucca which has Tele Atlas mapping and that when entering my postcode and house number 4A (although it finds it as 4 due to fact that the original No4 was demolished and 2 bungalows built on the same plot), it put me right outside my front gate, the original location for No4, but with the the X970T it defaults to No.7 or 10.
