I bought a TomTom ONE within the last few weeks and have yet to discover what the SD slot is good for. Apparently the earlier versions kept the map data there, but that is no longer true. Can programs or features or map updates be added through this port? Can data be extracted here?

Hi,
I have the ONE, not the ONE XL, and it is for the US and Canada. Do your comments still apply?

If it works without an SD card the the comments above still stand, there are some TomTom One units out that do indeed use flash memory rather than an SD card, it would appear you have one of these.

You can update the application software, add POI or change the map via a USB lead to the device to your PC, or you can buy a larger card and install everything to that. For example lets say you were tripping to Europe, you would have to copy the application and voices to a new SD card along with a Europe map, in the USA use the device without the SD card - USA maps, in Europe insert the SD cards - European maps.

The most vital thing that you should do with the device is to fully back it up to your PC, if the device crashes you need the backup to recover the data to the unit, TomTom no longer sell the devices with software disks.

If you are unsure about backing up the unit have a read or #1 on the FAQ Page - Mike

hi
to keep it simple, does this mean you cant run tomtom on the internal memory and have only pois on your memory card

I have just bought a tomtom one v2 europe new edition which runs without a memory card and have been trying to put voices and pois only on a lexmark 1gb sd card but the tomtom rejects the card every time even when it is blank
The card has been formated with FAT,FAT32 and also by the panasonic formating tool and it still gets rejected

Any POI files you install to the device MUST be placed into the map folder, as your map and application are stored using the internal memory of the device they need to also be located here, just put the POI files into the map folder on the device and it will work.

If you need/ want to use a memory card you can do this, but you must copy the entire contents of the device memory to the SD card using the PC (see the FAQ page #1 I linked to earlier), following that guide will allow you to place all the files/ folders from the internal memory to the SD card, with the card inserted to the device it will boot from the card rather than the internal memory.

Think of it as two locations you can either use the internal storage OR the SD card, but for the SD card to work it needs all the data from the device installing to it first - assuming the card has a fast enough read speed - Mike

Hi David,I believe you have the one xl europe model.
The one xl europe has a 1 gb hard drive memory which the western europe maps completly fills. There is very little room for poi to be added.
you will have to purchase a 2 gb sd card, transfer all info from the hard drive onto it which allows room for speed cams.ect. But beware if you download the full set of speedcams (32 files or so) you would still be very limited to the number of downloads the card would carry, as the total number of poi is restricted to approx 100 only.

Can you just clarify the restriction of 100 on the number of POIs? There are many more speed cameras than that in the UK. Have I misunderstood?

It's 100 POI categories ("petrol stations", "banks" etc.).
Each category can have many hundreds of individual entries. (I've never seen an actual figure quoted, but it's never been a problem)

The largest category that I've seen and used was one of the old PostCode POIs. 237,000+ entries. Shocked
