ok, I don't know what she did but, my friend has broken her 510

so much so that TTHome doesn't see it when connected to the PC and when you switch it on it shows the SD card with a red X over it and won't go any further

I've tried accessing the card with a card reader but no joy, Windows just asks if I want to format the card

I don't know what firmware, what version maps or anything else about it other than it won't work

she rang TomTom and they gave her a list of instructions, including downloading some upgrade software from their site, but it's made no difference as you need to be able to connect to the device to install the upgraded software

any ideas ?

should I format the card and install the upgrade or just to see if TTHome will connect

or should she send it back to tomtom and hope they'll reinstall the software or replace the SD card ?

or, the quickest but illegal(ish) solution, if I download a hooky map will her original code work ? if so what version map would have been bundled with it ?
it says GB + Major roads of Europe on the box

just thought of something else...

as TTHome says "no compatible device connected" could the firmware be knackered too ?

she really is blonde and hasn't a clue... I'm guessing she's taken the unit off the stand whilst it was loading updates ?

If she's been connecting it to the PC, chances are she might have agreed to do a TT Home backup some time? Look for that on her PC. Fire up TT Home and try for the Restore Backup option, see what you get (mine shows a list of the backups I've done with Home - all more than six months ago, because I don't trust it any more and now use Win Explorer) - when I click it, it tells me to connect the TT device - maybe it will recognise it then?

Hi, The maps are locked to the device, so a "Hooky" map won'y work with her activation code, also using "Hooky" softwear is frowned upon on here. Has she got a FULL Windows explorer backup of her device, if not, I wouldn't format the SD card, or you won't have any softwear at all. Have you tried re-settind the device, press the re-set button and hold it down for about 30 seconds. Look here, number 2.

I've never had call to use the TT Home backup, of course, but logic (?) would suggest that a device with a blank SD card should take a full restore on board - I mean, if you have to have a working card, what's the point of Restore? I wouldn't format that existing card to do so though, I'd use a different one - the "dead" one might still have some sort of TT life in it.

unfortunately she hadn't backed it up Rolling Eyes

just tried resetting it but nothing changed, it's still showing the SD card image with the red X over it
Windows Explorer still asks to format the card and TThome still doesn't see the device

I'll get her to contact TT again and see if she can return the SD card and/or get a replacement

thanks all
