I did the test pressing the RESET button during the "Loader" phase and it works!!

So now I have this screen "System Software Missing".

I tried to follow the instructions above installing 2.4 (056601000240.rgn) but I still get "No updates are available for your product"

I am looking for the 2.7 piece of code maybe it will be an intermediate step ;)

Cheers

Xabix,

I'm glad the reset button trick worked for you. At least now you can get you PC to recognize the Nuvi.

Although, I'm not entirely sure why the 2.40 software isn't working for you. The tech support guy I worked with told me that is was basically a system restore version that they use for instances like this.

Is your unit a Nuvi 360? Just want to confirm.

Hi Kmichalec,

You are right I have a Nuvi 660 and not 360. Actually I missed this too. Sorry :-(

At least now I can understand why I was getting a different behaviour 8O

Thanks for your help, I may check more specific helps (about the 660)

Thanks
XabiX

That makes a bit more sense now. Now that you are at this stage, you should be able to call Garmin Tech Support, and get the restore version software used for the 660 (I would assume).

Good luck!

Indeed - you need the RGN file from Garmin for your unit, not a normal earlier software firmware for this to work.

Since these posts Garmin have harded their attitude towards customers with this problem, & believe its their fault, even though they didn't tell them of the 257 limit.
I had a Nuvi 660 with the "loading maps" problem.... their unhelpful desk just told me I'd corrupted the software & would have to sent it back & pay for a repair on a 2 week old unit !!! You would have thought they would have put a warning in the instructions by now. I sent it back to the original vendor (GPS) who replaced it in 3 days for free.

I've got the same problem but can't get around the issue for the ideas on the web. The 257 limit is a new one to me. I spoke to Garmin UK who said they didn't really know what the limit is. I had just loaded over 257 POI categories, a warning in the SW and/or a function to delete the POI's once loaded in maintenance mode would be a good idea

Sorry to hear of your "257" woes. Garmin are playing "dumb" on this one I'm afraid. Considering the number of posts on here & other web sites, its difficult to draw any other conclusion. Just type in "Garmin loading maps 257" into Google!!!
When I contacted them they didn't want to know & were going to charge me to fix it. Fortunately GPS ltd were much better & replaced my unit straight away. I'm assuming Garmin still get the units back!!! There must be a mountain of "reconditioned" units somewhere as they can't exactly sell them as new again. The slow growth in this negative publicity is doing them no good at all.

An update to the 257 problems. I have had a mail from Garmin UK in which they admit they have a problem. They don't state the details but say they have an unreleased firmware rev which worked fine with the POI set they I loaded when I locked my Garmin up. I was given no release date or exactly what it fixes.

I was told if the POI file could be removed then the unit would work fine but there was no way to delete the POI file. A thought I had is to load the POIs to an external SD card and when asked as boot if you want to copy them over, say no. Thus the POI file is on the SD card and in the event of a lockup the SD card can just be pulled.

Update: Just seen this
