I have used the PocketGPSWorld in the past on my Nuvi 310D late last year and they always showed cameras that were opposite to direction of travel.
Can anyone tell me if this is still the case as I understood it may be changed to show just cameras in direction of travel.
I had the 3 month free trial for the Garmin camera database which did this but at £39 thought it a bit expensive, but in fairness a good database.
Thanks
Roger

I don't believe that GARMIN units have directional POI capability - so you get warned when approaching from either direction. There aren't too many nav systems offering his capability yet.

If you liked the Garmin database you will love the database from this site - and it's almost half the price!

Phil,
Thanks for your reply.
My 310D with the Garmin camera database definitely only shows camera locations for the direction of travel. I use the A65 out of Leeds every week and there are several cameras along this road and the Garmin doesn,t show the ones for the opposite direction.
Do you happen to know if I download this database will it just remove the other ?
I think I have read that somewhere.
Thanks again
Roger

The Cyclops database which is supplied pre-loaded to the Garmin unit does indeed contain directional data which is used to suppress warnings about certain cameras where required i.e. when the camera cannot photograph you due to direction of travel.

The PocketGPSWorld database does contain directional information but (as yet) the Garmin cannot use this data, so you will be warned of a camera irrespective of direction of travel - Mike

Mike,
Thanks for that. I knew it was provided by Cyclops and I suppose its only available via Garmin.

Hi Mike,
An idea of other manufacturer's GPS units other than Garmin that can use the directional functions of the PocketGPSWorld database?

Mio Map and I-Go can use directional information from the camera database. Drivesmart and CameraAware (both speed camera warning systems with no navigation) also use directional information - Mike

Is there a program out there that can take a poi file and convert it back to a csv? Running that on the Cyclops data might show how the directional data is formatted and thus how it works.

I recently tried the free 3 month speed camera database from garmin. Found that in my local area it gave false speed limit warnings and said fixed cameras were in a road where they have not been since 2002. At one point i had the garmin and the pocketgps database installed on the unit. Lets just say i couldnt wait til the trial expired and turned off the notifications for garmin speed cameras.
