Want good topo maps for handheld

Is there a GPS you would recommend that has topo maps that I can update periodically as additional detail becomes available? I need a hand held for outdoor use that has superior topo maps.

Memory Map on a PDA or Garmin Hand helds.
There are pros and cons with the hardware choices such as robustness, battery life cost etc, but both will do the job well.
