I'm not sure if this is the best place but here goes!

I have a Tomtom One now for my wife and I want to hardwire it in, into a van. The USB cable has a braided outer cabel and then a black, green, white and red wires within.

I obviously don't need data transfer, but which wires need powering up to charge the TT One? Is it as easy as a 12 volt feed onto the red and earth the black (and the braided outer wire)?

Cheers

NO - DO NOT DO THIS!!! Stop!

The USB power is only 5V. If you wire it into your car supply it will fry something inside your nav system. The car adapter on the end of the USB lead contains the electronics to step the voltage down to 5V. Look at installing a separate car adapter socket (hidden or exposed) to plug your TT One power lead into.

Cheers Phil, hummmm , I have cut the big USB end off a cable already! I'll work something out, there must be some 5V feed within the van somewhere!

Best bet is to get a MP3 player charger with a USB end. Either get a cig lighter socket and tape/glue em together, or crack open the charger and solder in a wire to the 12 Volt contact - either leave the fuse in (if there is one), or add an inline fuse - you can't have to many but you certainly can have too few.

Keep in mind all of this is probably voiding any warrenty you have.

Cheers Robert. I have a cigarette lighter socket adapter which goes into USB. That probably is the best way as the whole wiring diagram requirement goes away then. I'm also considering just epoxying the adapter onto a USN lead and letting her charge it by having a wire across the dashboard!!!
