Where can I get a power cable with a built in voltage dropper so that I can "hard wire" my TomTom one into my car?? Dave.

Would it be possible to canibalise your existing car charger? Or buy a second one and use that.

That's what most of us do. Buy a short cigarette lighter extension cable from Maplins, chop off the plug and wire it into a fused 12v supply and hide under the dash and then plug your satnav with it's 12v adapter into that.

Where can I find a 12v power supply?

Could I use the 12v that is for my stereo?

If so, how's it done?

(i'm not great at electronics so as much info as you could give me would be appreciated) Smile

To be honest, if you don't know the answer then I wouldn't risk getting it wrong, you risk destroying your TomTom or worse. Most fuseboxes have a 12v accessory supply that is fused and this is the best place to take a feed from but you'd be best advised to get an auto electrician to wire in a feed for you, shouldn't cost much and would be much less risky!

I know this has been said already, but it can't be repeated too often IMHO.

If you ask an auto-electrician to wire it for you, all he needs to install is a fused feed (Preferably switched with the ignition) to a cable mounted cigarette lighter socket behind the dash.

You then plug an original TomTom power supply into that.

You DON'T want a 12V feed straight into a power plug in the back of the TomTom, that would kill the TomTom straight away.
