I have just purchased an Ipaq 2490, a qstarz BT-Q810 bluetooth GPS, and memory map GB south and totally failed to get them to work together. I even resorted to reading the manuals but to no avail.

I installed memory map on the PC and loaded it on the IPAQ ok (including web updates to version 5.13). Loaded a small bit of the Map to cover about 25 miles around where I live on the IPAQ and I can see that ok on the IPAQ but cannot get the GPS working with the IPAQ.

I have gone into settings, system, GPS and set the port to COM6 (because that is the port the pocketgps reviewer used). Set the GPS hardware port to COM5 at 4800 baud. It will not let me use com 6 as it says it need to be a different com port. I ticked manage GPS automatically.

I have set up a shortcut in bluetooth to IBT-GPS which connects to the GPS and shows in active connections outgoing connections iBT-GPS spp slave.

In GPS setup in memory map it give a list of makes for a cable connection so the only one I could think of choosing was under manufacturer was SIRF. I set 4800 baud

It did not work all I got was:-

Failed to terminate RS232 thread and the whole system is locked up.

If I do not set a hardware port it does not work and the error is timed out.

I have to say I am appalled by the quality of the manuals/help. The GPS has 6 pictures of how to open the battery compartment and tells you to refer to the pocket PC manuals. The IPAQ tells you to follow the software instructions. Memory map help tells me how to get a cable connection to a Garmin working but little about Bluetooth. Sorry had to get that of my chest.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get them working together I have wasted hours.

Don't select SiRF in the Memory Map application as the device will comunicate using the NMEA protocol so select "NMEA" Com Port as per your device and "115200" for the Baud speed (which is the correct Tx speed this GPS unit uses IIRC).
The fact it uses a SiRF-III chipset does not mean it will be transmitting the data out in SiRF mode, by default they use NMEA mode - although I agree these simple settings should be in the user manual - Mike

Mike,

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately I still cannot get it working. Do I need to have a hardware port or can I set it to none?

If you mean the stupid GPS applet within settings leave it set to default which is "none" for the hardware tab.
In Memory Map what settings have you got selected for the setup/ gps page - Mike

Mike,

I meant the hardware TAB under GPS. I have the manage GPS automatically ticked under the GPS access tab. In Memory map under GPS settings I now have COM5: (Bluetooth serial port) Manufacturer NMEA model is grayed out and baud rate is 115200. It is now saying communication time out.

What I really do not understand is how the bluetooth connection knows what port to send it to.

I am very grateful for your help.

Regards
Alan

A bit drastic but at least it worked, sorry I only just read your post from last night!

Leave the GPS aplet alone in the settings panel, you don't need to mess with this at all - in fact on some devices it is even hidden to prevent users from altering the device from a known working configuration.

The only time I have used this applet sucessfully is to share the GPS data between two applications running at the same time - not something you do every day though, and to be honest Fransons GPS Gate program does a far better job at managing the GPS data and sharing it than MicroSoft will ever be capable of (should you ever need to run multiple GPS apps at the same time) - Mike
