Is the FM transmitter actually missing from the UK Nuvi 660 or is it just software disabled?

On the UK models, Garmin have confirmed that the FM Transmitter Hardware has been disabled and there is no way to re-enable it - even with a firmware update. Sad

Now there is a challenge for you Exclamation

If they (GARMIN) really mean it can't be enabled by firmware then there is probably a hardware component missing - could be something as simple as a link. The firmware may well recognise the FM unit - you never can tell.

I guess that if you really wanted this facility and if it's definitely disabled on the Nuvi surely you could get an FM transmitter for less than a tenner and stick it in the headphone jack, though TBH with one notable exception that I've heard, the output from FM is very poor and I can't imagine listening to music through it for any length of time. The Nuvi is not nearly as good as a built in unit which kills the music/radio for directions, but IME the output from the Nuvi's own speakers seems to go loud and clear. The highest volume I have mine on at motorway speeds is 80%.

I personally use a cassette adapter (Yes my car is old enough to have a cassette ;-) ) and plug into the headphone socket. Sound perfect out of the speakers in the car and means I can hear directions when I'm on the motorway.

Nice to be young again, i have to have it on at least 90% sometimes 100%, that's what happens when you get old.
