Tomtom GO Classic - flickering screen

I have an out-of-warranty Go Classic, the screen of which flickers occassionally when subjected to vibration (e.g. when driving over pot-holes / speed bumps etc). Sometimes the screen then goes very dim, but with the image remaining just visible, especvially in sunlight. Its like the screen's backlight has been swtiched off. The unit continues to operate normally in all other respects (giving directions etc) and a tap on the side of the device brings the screen brightness back to normal, until the next pot hole.

In my mind, a loose connection or a dry solder joint could be the primary cause. As I'm prepared to open the GO up to investigate & attempt to fix, can anyone suggest what and where I should be looking and whether I'm likely to be able to fix it (I have basic soldering iron skills!)
