Mains charger and car hardwire question

I have had my Quest 1 for some time and am very happy in general terms .( not wild about screen "crazing" )
The hardwire Ram mount with audio for my Triumph ( never used...happy with position on my bike ) is great but I made the mistake of buying a new car with a non standard lighter socket and the unit will not charge. As far as I can see the alternatives are:-
1...Replace lighter socket.......expensive as whole facia would need removing!
2...Hardwire option...from where and can I retain audio?
3...Install an extra accessory socket...has anyone tried this?
4...Are there any reliable mains chargers for this unit?

Any advice appreciated

:P Time to "fess up.

I looked in my box and found mains charger...DOH...My excuse was that I never needed it before.

Ok..So now I have removed the easiest question can anyone help with the remainder or are they too hard ? Laughing

If you have one of the industry standard 'accessory' sockets available, try in glove box or elsewhere. Then the simplest way is to buy one of those plugs and have a 'fly lead' supplying an ordinary car ciggie lighter socket (female).
This will save any messing with wiring et al.

You should be able to source all the parts from Maplins etc.

What kind of socket do you have? If it is the Hella DIN type accessory socket then a simple adapter can be bought that has a cigarette lighter socket on one end and the Hella plug on the other.

When you say 'non standard lighter socket' what exactly do you mean, I thought that cigar lighter sockets were a defacto standard. Rather dumb of a car manufacturer to produce a car with an alternative design seeing as almost everyone these days has one or more accessories that rely on being able to plug into one. Have you enquired with the dealer as to the availability of an adaptor. Failing that I would suggest a visit to Maplin's where you'll be able to buy the components to make up one of your own so long as you can find a male end to plug into your non standard lighter socket. If the latter is so non standard that there isn't a male end available you'll need to hard wire a trailing lead with a standard cigar lighter socket on the end.

Cut off std. male end and either hard wire or solder on suitable plug for your socket.

Or make up your own.

BTW Garmin has a new cradle/speaker kit for the Quests. Gone are the cumbersome 3D gimballing joints and in comes an elegant RAM type ball that clicks into a matching socket on the back of the cradle. The speaker is also a big improvement on the original

Thanks for the replies...It looks like the pl5 adapter will cover it.

For some reason best known to Rover (You remember them) used these cigar sockets which would not take normal adapters but sold accessory sockets seperatly (probably trying to get more money out of you ).

I will contact a Rover garage before buying adapter.

Are there lots of manufactureres that do this...I see its a fairly common problem on the Rover 75.

Can I ask if the PPL005 is a replacement plug?If it is then I would loose my speaker capability as it is integral.

If it is does anyone know of an adapter...plus as there are obviosly more than one type on socket what are their names?

My apologies for a very senior moment! Of course you have to retain the Garmin plug as it not only includes the speaker but also the 12-5V converter

If your Rover socket accepts what I refer to as a BMW or DIN type plug then PAC002 from the above page will allow you to hot swop between cars/bikes
