I assume to fit the Western Europe map on to a 1gb card, details like rivers, minor roads and loads of POIs had to go.

As an example my golf club (Banbury) doesn't even have a POI on the Western Europe map and the country lane to the clubhouse isn't shown nor are the rivers and canal that surround the course.

Whereas on the GB map there is a POI, the country lane and the waterways.

Both maps tested are V6.

In the past map compression has been implemented to reduce the amount of storage required for the map data to fit onto an appropriate storage card. Typically what is lost is the accuracy in the shapes of the polygons representing towns and water features. To most users these are not really important other than giving a general warm feeling that you are in the right place as you go over a river.

What has not been removed from the map is minor roads all currently available roads should be in all maps. Ie if a road is in the UK map it will be in the (same map release) European version as well. Do you have the map versions so I can check this with TomTom.

As far as POIs go they will obviously be different between the maps as there will be an order of magnitude more for the European version. I am not currently aware what the selection process is for these.

Hi Mike, as I posted earlier I've noticed similiar discrepencies wrt minor roads/tracks between the Wetern Europe and Germany Maps. For eamaple if you look at the area round Aschaffenburg Airport on the Germany Map there are a lot of minor roads shown, if you then look at it on the Western Europe map there are considerably less.

Map version is as in signature. I'd be interested to see what TomTom say.

Cheers for now.

I miss the rivers too, nice to know when you're near one (especially on a dark night on a strange road). Here's how I got round the problem. I installed a 2gb sd card and added the old GB map alongside the Western European map. I can now switch between the 2 if needed. I've also added seperate maps (TeleAtlas) of Europe which also have more detail/POIs (but not the latest road updates) I haven't had a chance yet to check out recently added roads in my area but I doubt I'll be overwhelmed. Overall I think the latest Western Euro maps weren't worth €79.

Merry Christmas Smile

I have finally got an official response from TomTom:

TomTom delivers precise, easy and stress free navigation with new maps that contain the most up-to-date information on the market.

TomTom is able to offer its customers the integrated map of Western Europe maps at an attractive price point, by keeping the size of the integrated map to less than 1 GB.

We have not taken out anything that may affect a safe and efficient navigation experience. However, small non-essential navigation features like some graphic details (i.e. small lakes/ponds) and very minor dead-end/forest roads that do not contain navigable addresses, have been removed.

TomTom has the best compression techniques in the market and we continue to explore better techniques, to compress in the best possible way.

So essentially they are saying that they have only removed minor details. This does not appear to be the case from some of the reports we are getting here. Please can you post details of navigable roads/major features that are missing from these maps in this thread. I doubt that it will have any effect, but we will at least be able to judge the scale of the problem.

I understand the size limitation trying to keep under 1Gb but with the cost of memory nowadays I would rather have a fully featured map and have to pay an extra £25 or so to get a new memory card. At least I will have space then for my extra voices and POIs...

Blimey! a response from TomTom, I've mentioned the missing details to them and they haven't replied to me. "Minor Details" have been left off? I wouldn't call about 30 miles of the River Tyne minor, or most of The River Derwent. There's also quite a few POIs less on the new maps. While we're on the subject of rivers, If I'm lost/broken down etc on a dark night and I can see a light in the distance it would be very handy to know if I'm about to step into a river or lake if I decide to take the shortest route to the light. The missing tracks would be handy for the same reason. After all, they do expect us navigators to walk sometimes as they have a "walking" mode. I think I'd sooner have the out of date maps with the rivers/tracks on. There's also ramblers, horseriders and off-road motorcyclists to consider. I say "bring back the rivers and tracks", a 2gb sd card can be found for under £20 now so in this instance size shouldn't matter. Or maybe they're just tooling up for the effects of Global Warming when we'll have no rivers. Rolling Eyes
