Hi Everybody,

When I first joined this forum, I was under the illusion that it was more like a self-help group.

Oh, how wrong I was!!!!

It seems that whilst people are quite keen to argue and dispute the contents of other users' postings, there is somewhat of a reluctance to offer solutions to problems which individuals are experiencing.

There appears to be far too much one-upmanship and too many egos to satisfy than a wish to resolve issues - hacked, 'native' or otherwise - which people who have spent good money on their system are experiencing with varying degrees of frustration to overcome.

For example, I've posted the contents of personal updates from Mio - the contents of which have been disputed. Bearing in mind Mio's reputation and the fact that any feedback from them is as common as hens' teeth or rocking horse dung, we should be grateful for ANY information "from the horse's mouth" and stop shooting the messenger.

Having once threatened to stop posting updates and keep my thoughts to myself, I changed my mind and posted a few more messages - only to be left feeling that I needn't have bothered.

The irony is that there is a hell of a lot of knowledge and experience out there - users like sallyann to name but one. Thumbs Up

I THEREFORE SUGGEST THAT WE CUT THE CRAP, DROP THE EGOS, POOL OUR KNOWLEDGE & RESOURCES AND FIND SOLUTIONS OR GIVE ADVICE!! Idea

If we are not prepared to do this, then all we are doing is adding to the frustration and misery already being suffered Exclamation

OK, perhaps the occasional joke to lighten things up - but it should be clear that such postings are light-hearted and not a poke in the eye for anybody. :D

This forum is already inpersonal, in that it is simply black text on a page and we do not have the benefit of facial expressions or voice tones to give that extra dimension to postings.

At the end of the day, we're just talking about little boxes and the sun will still rise in the morning if the damn things won't even turn on.

My professional experience is healthcare, where peoples' lives depend on how well you perform.

This technology is simply a tool and shouldn't be viewed as a matter of life and death or a means to satisfy egos.

If anybody wishes to disagree with or dispute anything I've said, please feel free to comment and I'll be quite happy just to and sort out my own problems.

If I felt the same way as you about the PGPSW forum I wouldn't be here.

It was fine long before October of this year and no doubt will carry on as before with or without those who are not happy with it.

Very subtle!!

So how was it before February when you joined "long before" me?

Maybe you haven't read postings on the 'Mio & TMC' thread with which I've been particularly involved.

Having looked through some of your postings, you don't seem to have much to say about the Mio range - so perhaps my posting about experiences with the 'Medion / Mitac & Clones' users don't apply...maybe the TomTom/Garmin users are more socialised.

...or perhaps it's because you're retired and have more time and patience than me

...or maybe you don't believe in teamwork and would rather spend your time disagreeing as the tone of your posting suggests

Lost_Property since February, Border_Collie long before that but after a problem with my computer and trying to sign up again it said Border_Collie was already taken, hence Lost_Property.

I'd also looked through your postings and I felt the comments you made

would be ideal reading for yourself.

Personally I think it was very insulting to the many contributers to this forum.

Well, you have to give as good as you get - or so they say.

It's been 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

Of course, you're perfect and have never given the kind of response to which I've referred...except to me obviously!

I'll keep the contents of my e-mails from Mio to myself and leave you to do whatever you do best.

And this is what you call moderation??

The moderators do nothing in this forum to stop things getting out of control and personal.

Just cleared up a few misunderstandings with people, but this thread has demonstrated exactly my point and there's no teamwork.

Oh well, you live and learn - this forum just adds to the frustration.

I'm out of here and better off for it.

Whilst I agree 100% with the concept of your comment, it could possibly have been put more diplomatically bearing in mind the essence of the start of this thread.
It's a fact of life in all forums, discussion groups and newsgroups that egos and sensitivities surface, perhaps more so than in face to face meetings, but I feel that MioC210user has a valid point.

The issue of TMC problems is an area where I would have thought that we could have had slightly more input from the Team, perhaps reporting the official response, or lack of, from the various manufacturers concerned.

I was hoping to upgrade to a TMC enabled system this Xmas, and have been following all the treads relating to this with great interest. However i must admit I'm not a lot wiser than when I first started.

well said!!

i've been viewing this forum for a while and feel a great sadness when the morerators have, themselves, to be moderated!

looks like a no-win situation, but even the moderators have demonstrated a clear lack of teamwork ideals

I can't agree more! Clap

I've moved from being an active participant in this forum to just lurking and reading... On several occasions my comments/suggestions/thoughts have been put down or dismissed out of hand. On occasion I have felt like a naughty school boy being put in his place by the "older" boys...

I did begin to wonder if the "Beginner" tag against my name made people think that I was inexperienced -- if I'm tagged as a beginner, then obviously my comments can be disregarded... after all, the "older" boys are so much more experienced, so anything I could come up with would have already been thought of/discussed/dismissed.

As an IT professional with a rather large IT company, I have many years experience in software development and user interface design... And my current role is working with end users on user interfaces. These people are not IT professionals or "geeks" -- they are the people who buy and use our software -- and their views and comments are a revelation! It's like a breath of fresh air -- a fresh pair of eyes, a new perspective and a lifetime of experience makes their view of the world unique. In the team, new people to the software are called "Newbies"

I think that before you post a message (or a cutting reply) on this forum, stop and remember:

- Everyone on this forum is unique
- Everyone has a different perspective
- Everyone has life experiences
- Everyone has "baggage"

Your style, language, culture, background and "take" on the world may not be the same as the person posting a message in the forum...

There are some amazingly talented and wonderful people on this forum who have been a great help to me. There are also some that have been a little less than that... And a couple who have been downright obnoxious. Unfortunately, that's life. But as a community, the greater goal should be to help, to educate and to grow.

My softare forum "newbies" have taught me:

- New ideas are not bad
- Revisiting an old idea is not bad (the world may have changed since you last looked)
- Questions are good
- Answers as better
- An answer may lead to another question
- An answer may not be correct
- It's ok to say "I don't like xxx"
- It's better to say "I don't like xxx, but perhaps if it was like xxx"

On here, forum rules are forum rules, but I try to stick to simple ones:

FOR NEWBIES: Newbies should seek out the more experienced users and learn from them. Experienced users should be treated with respect -- they can (and will) bite if provoked. The experienced user's answer to a Newbies question may help -- but it may not. That isn't their fault, it's an answer from their point-of-view and experience.

FOR EXPERIENCED: Experienced users should respect the Newbies. A "beginner" isn't really a beginner at all. ALL Experienced users were once Newbies. Listen to the Newbies, as horriying as it may seem, they may have come up with something that you haven't thought of. A Newbie's ideas and suggestions may be radical, off-the-wall and at times "random", but if they weren't, how far would computer technology have come? Wink

After all, none of us want to be thought of as the person who said "A WHAT? A MOUSE? What's wrong with Ctrl+S, Ctrl+E, Ctrl+D and Ctrl+X?" -- and if any of you remember using those keys for real in business applications you have my sympathy (and respect) Laughing

I do hope MioC210user sticks around -- and I do hope that anyone who looks back over their previous posts and sees where they have been, let's say, "less than helpful", goes back and does something about it.

And with that, I'll return to my box, close the lid and wait for the explosion... Wink

Andrew

PS The definition of "experienced" may be a person with just one post more than a "newbie" Smile

Nice Post Fuzzy Duck, and just to prove your point on different users, I still use Ctrl (and the rest) in Photoshop and Quark amongst others.

Fuzzyduck,

You are quite right - the forum rankings relate only to the number of posts that a member has made on the forum since their join date and may not accurately reflect their level of experience. Therefore no one should be looking down on or making assumptions about others so I am sorry if you feel that you have been disregarded in the past.

I hope that this hasn't put you off posting and that you will continue to assist people as and when you can. :-)

You are quite right in that we were all beginners once - I can remember when I couldn't even read a map!! Embarassed

Regards,

Bo Peep.

Well, it's GREAT to see that FUZZYDUCK gets a pat on the back from the moderator after being put off adding posting. I, on the other hand get hung, drawn and quartered then left out to dry for trying to encourage teamwork and vilified as a troll - even by the moderators.

A fantastic team effort by everybody!!!
