I'm running XP SP2. I've had my i3 around a fortnight now, when I first installed the USB driver from the CD, and installed the POI loader [and g-start], everything worked fine and I managed to get the latest speed camera database installed.
The last few days though, Windows intermittently failed to recognise the unit, and now cannot 'see' the Garmin at all.
Can anyone shed any light on this, is the driver supplied by Garmin known to be flaky?

I had this problem when i put XP on my computer and it wouldn't recognise the i3 was connected. To sort it out I had to disable my firewall and I think the anti-virus as it thought the i3 was a virus, I also closed down any running programs while i loaded the drivers again and its been fine since.

Make sure you plug the i3 into a main-board USB port, not a hub or a front port as sometimes the ports on the front of PC cases are hubs.

I've tried both, sadly the result is the same.

Unfortunately, trying to go through the install routine off the cd again, also fails as the installer insists the device is not turned on or connected even though it is. Windows reports the garmin as an unrecognised device.

It does make me wonder how it can be working one minute and not working the next...

It may seem over the top, but you could try reinstalling windows.

Alternatively try removing all the Garmin programs and rolling back XP to settings you had before using it. Then obviously update it again and try reinstalling??

Do any of the above at your own risk.

To help anyone else with this problem, after a lot of about I've got it working again. I deleted all Garmin entries in the windows registry, deleted the garmin folder from the c drive, then ran the installer off the cd again - although it stopped again at the point where windows is supposed to fire up its 'found new hardware' wizard. However at this point the garmin folder had been reinstated to the c drive.
So, I had a look in device manager, and found an entry [with yellow '!' for garmin gps]. I then started the 'add new hardware' wizard in control panel, and this time windows automatically found the drivers it needed off the cd.
So the pc and the garmin are working together again.

Does anyone know if its possible to transfer POI's directly to the mini SD card via an adaptor and card reader? Or do you have to do it via usb to the garmin itself?

By the way, I'm using a usb port off a powered hub. This problem seems unrelated to those others have found using hubs, maybe because the hub is powered and therefore not prone to dips in power?

Yes it is. This is the best thing to do if you are using the spped cameraas and MaFt's POI's as there are so many. POILoader will see the card in the reader as a drive and load directly to it.

Glad to hear you got the USB drivers sorted.

At Maplins I see an all-in-one reader which supports transflash here for £16.99, which is a little expensive maybe. Also note that 7dayshop has been recomended and has a transflash-only reader over here for £2.99 plus (perversly) £3.95 for p&p

I've ordered a Kingston 256 MB mini SD card from Choice Stationery for £7.70

http://www.choicestationery.co.uk/Product.asp?Prd=17132

which apparently comes with a full size adapter. I'm hoping to use the adapter to back up my current I3 card to my PC, and use the new card for USA maps (idiots guide, anybody?).

No connection with Choice, it's just that I use them for inkjet cartridges etc, and they are cheap and reliable.
