Boat navigation

Has anyone seen or tried any boat navigation software that will run on a TomTom?
Garmin produce the software for their devices - just wondered if anyone had something similar for the TT

there is some freeware offroad addons that might be usefull..

guys the tomtom is designed as a street navigation tool only.

i would storng remeomend NOT using one of these devices for navigation on open water. if you got in to trouble i think the coastgaurd and RNLI would not be impressed for marine navigation please get the right kit

its only the newer marine stuff that uses maps.. the older stuff (like mine) would use a marine chart.. all u need from the sat nav unit is the ability to enter and save waypoints and basically tell u what your heading is and where exactly u are at any time.. the freeware stuff looks like it might do the trick..

all the road tomtom would need is marine maps designed for it and it would work okay.. i would love some marine stuff with real maps.. but its beyond my price range even thow the maps would be very easy to create.. they would need to be uptodate thow.. the chart between trent falls and the humber bridge needs an update every month for example the sandbanks pretty well move all the time.. he he he

of course a marine unit says when u turn it on.. "do not use this device as your sole means of navigation".. at least mine does..

I just have visions of the coastguard answering your Mayday call....

They ask your position and you then telling them that according to TomTom there is a petrol station just off your port bow! Confused

all u really need to know is your lat/long position.. this is one thing a tomtom is pretty good at.. combine this with an uptodate marine chart and u can or could navigate with a tomtom..

u set way points from the chart before u start the trip and off u go.. waypoint to waypoint..

not quite as easy as bunging in a postcode but its what i would have to do with my (few years old) purpose designed marine system.. the freeware offroad and remember/reverse trips software would seem to enable a tomtom to do this..

real marine maps would make it a lot easier its just that as soon as the word marine is mentioned prices quadruple..

but the bottom line is.. a sat/nav device simply knows where u are.. the rest is just software..

maps have not always been part of marine sat/nav units and most still arnt for most of them.. a paper chart is used for this.. and they work out pretty expensive..

compared to a modern tomtom the marine stuff in my boat is kinda ancient.. it also takes about 15 minutes (with its externsl aerial) to lock on to the satelites.. all it basically does is tell me where i am.. which way i am going.. how fast i am going and has the ability to set and rembember waypoints.. not all that clever to be honest.. it cost a forune and compared to what a 200 quid tomtom can do its a bit of a joke.. he he
