Here are my modifications on the MDA Vario (HTC wizard, O2 Mini-S, Qtek 9100, K-Jam etc)

TODAY SCREEN.
I removed the today plug-in to reclaim the precious today screen real estate, then mapped a hardware button to start Tomtom.
This is achieved here.
Start/settings/today/items
and here
Start/settings/personal/buttons.

MENUS.
-click on image for larger view on the host
Personalize the menu set. I removed the traffic icons etc that I don’t use, put the other icons where I want them and added my moniker on the menu bar,
I used this online menu builder.

MAPS.

Modified the map colours. I found the pastel colours looked a bit washed out on my device, so darkened them, I also wanted the roads to be more similar to a paper map i.e. blue motorways etc. Next I changed the route foreground colour to black. This gives better visibility in the tiny route summary screen and is much easier to see the route on my PPC screen in bright reflective conditions. I darkened the standard Africa map so I don’t need to adjust backlight intensity when switching to night scheme (the MDA Vario is quite bright even on a low setting).
Color Scheme Editor will generate map schemes either from scratch or by modifying an original.

POIs.

I have only installed a few must have POIs (mainly due to the 39 limit) but I keep a comprehensive set on my storage card that I can apply them to the map should my needs change when away from my PC.
Oldboy’s Single Petrol set is a must, for HGV robinwalton’s Low Bridges, and of course the PGPSW speed cameras (all Icons modified).
Oldboy’s site

REAL VOICE WARNINGS.
The original system is too limited and annoying, if I want to hear a cow I would take a walk in the countryside. Ray Flanagan’s site provides the software, sound files and tutorial to replace the original sounds and menu with meaningful spoken voice warnings.
http://www.tomtomsatnav.info/poiw.html
It seems that the 24 file PGPSW speed camera database has outgrown the original file set, meaning if you want to hear the 20mph, variable and tba warnings you will need to create them yourself.
One such example can be downloaded here in .wav format.
http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=124410
You will notice I have added a siren sound at the beginning to get my attention and increased the overall volume so I can hear it over my old Diesel Discovery at motorway speeds.
I used the spare slots available in POIextend for other warning prompts and spoken low bridges alerts.

FINALLY.
My PPC today screen includes a RSS feedreader that notifies me of the PGPSW updates (amongst other stuff).

None of this is dificult, just follow the various tutorials and work on a backup file for safety.
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Mullet
Very impressive. Now, if you can carry out a mod that will let me have the tomtom navigation screen zoomed out and stay that way I will put your name forward for a knighthood.

Nice mods. I personally use the uk_os.clr file from Ben Gamble which adjusts the map colours to the OS 1:50000 colours. This (and many others) can be found here -

Its also worth noting you can download real voice warnings ready made from here

http://www.tomtomsatnav.info/realvoice.html

They also have the OGG sound files so you can use the program above to make your own file. For some reason the ready made ones only use some of the sounds, if you download the OGG sound files from the site there are a lot more sounds you can add yourself. They also have links with examples of the sounds.

All very professional, clear british voices. (ive got Viki Archer, meow!)

Hi alix776
Towards the beginning of this topic I said that it would be great if someone managed to carry out a Mod that allowed the navigation screen to zoom out and stay that way. Your reply suggested that I try a VGA screen.

Since then I have brought a Dell Axim X51v and the VGA screen does indeed appear to have zoomed out. In fact, it was the first thing I noticed when I first installed TT5 on to the Dell.
The display is quite brilliant.

Hi Mullet or any others,

I have a MDA Vario II and I installed TomTom 5.21 on the memory card. When I load the card TomTom Starts up for a second or two and then it disapperas. Has anyone successfully used TomTom5 on a MDA Vario II.
The same TomTom software works fine on my IPaq 3870 which has pocket PC windows version 3.0 version on it. My Vario has version 5!

I bought my Vario II mainly to have phone PDA and Navigator together but battled with the configs no luck.

I would very much appreciate someon's help on this.

I like the menu builder but I'm stupid and can't find the TomTom\sdkregistry folder! It's frustrating me to the point of throwing things!

Do I need to hack into it or something?

Its within the Tomtom folder on the device, not the Tomtom folder on the storage card. If it is not present in device/tomtom create it.

Hi!

I used that website to alter the menus and whilst good it took ages and the site kept crashing. I found another one that involves a download to the PC but makes life so much simpler.

Try This!

I prefer Liz Whitaker myself, but that's another matter Embarassed

I notice the file can't create custom warnings on TTN6 - has anyone found one that will? I would REALLY like to have Liz warning me of cams aswell as directing me Wink
