I have had my i3 since January and have connected to the pc a few times to download speed cams etc and had no problems. A while back though I updated the PC to Windows XP Profesional and today I tried to connect the i3 so I could roll back from 3.1 to 2.7. Pc won't detect it, I have tried the 'found new hardware' wizard, tried reloading the CD drivers but still no joy.

Can anyone help please, I have to get rid of 3.1, it is drivig me mad now, on Sunday in map view the little speedo in the corner clocked me as doing 475MPH and the map was showing me driving in a straight line across roads and over fields and pavements. Had enough now :x

Install the drivers first before you connect the cable.

Also, make sure you plus the lead straight into the PC, not an unpowered hub. That could make a difference.

Thanks Ian, I tried to load the drivers from the CD but it wont let me, tells me that to carry on I have to connect the i3, as soon as i do it says it cant detect it and it all goes round in circles again. Even tried downloading the updates straight from the Garmin website but the computer seems to hang when I open the file.

Just a thought.... Unlikely to be an issue for most home users...

But are you an administrator on the PC? Are you able to install, say, other software ok?

I have just tried the following with my i3 on a PC running Windows XP Home, There was NO Garmin related software loaded when I started (Daughters computer, not mine):

Download and install Garmin POI Loader application from HERE

Plug in the i3 (i3 switched off) direct to the PC (do not go through a hub etc).

i3 wakes up and PC prompts "Found new Hardware"

Select "Yes - this time only" to connect to Windows update to search for software, then select Next.

Select Install software Automatically, and press Next.

PC should search and find Garmin USB GPS, press Finish.

Now you should be able to comunicate with your device - Note my i3 is only running 2,70 as I have found this to be the most stable - Mike

If you have recently updated to XP, are you sure that the USB is working correctly on the PC.
Have you tried any other USB devices since the upgrade?

Thanks for all the replies, I have finally got it working and am back on version 2.7. It turned out to be my anti virus/firewall, I turned these off, reconnected the i3 and it found the drivers straight away :D
