Surely once the mapping data is loaded onto the laptop it's irrelevant. It would be a full install.

Worth a call to customer support I reckon, if enough people have complained they might be giving out or exchanging for plain CN8, with it's short-comings (not full Europe on unit), on the quiet. Gotta be worth a try? _________________ Chas

I emailed customer support at Garmin Europe (via the on-line form) to ask if it would be possible to upgrade to V7 (disk sourced by myself) and then upgrade to V8, also asked that if this were possible what would be the effect on upgrade cost seeing as I've only just registered my Quest with CS6.
I got this reply just as short while ago:

You had me worried that I still had "that" hat on when I posted the milages so I have just rechecked and they are correct!..If anyone else with v6 an v8 wants to give it a go and put my mind at rest ...select the two point with the route tool , let it calculate the route then select all the tiles that route passes through in as tight a corridor as possible and compare the two .

Hi there, I have a .xls file that compares the size of each country with diferent versions of Mapsource (CS6, CS7 and CN8)
Put the things this way...
With CS6 I could load the entire maps ou Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, plus Southern France and Northern Italy;
With CS7, northern Italy just couldn't fit in the 243 Mb of the Quest 1
With CN8 there's only room available for Portugal, Spain and Southern France.
But the time it takes processing information is almost the same comparing CS6 with CN8
One thing I do is loading diferent mapsets in order to optimize the short memory of the Quest:
When I want only the main roads of a certain place I load the CS6 maptile and when more acurate information is needed just load the corresponding CN8 maptile.

Hmmm... Portugal and Spain, if I recall correctly, don't have a great deal of detail so surely their data doesn't amount to a great deal. In a rough cut using CS6 (all I have at the moment) Spain & Portugal amounts to around 87MB, France is over 200MB and Northern Italy is 90MB approx (down to Siena). The proportions should be similar for CN8 though probably marginally bigger for each.
It's not really whole countries that worry me, they'll be a bit bigger but the whole of the UK should still fit, it's long European route corridors being forced to include far more mapping either side due to the larger map tiles in CN8. I get where you're coming from with using mixed tiles from various versions, that's the approach I'll be taking though I would prefer to do that with CS7 than CS6. That's if I can get an unlock for CS7 upgrade along with the unlock for CN8 which is due from Garmin as a free upgrade. If I have to pay for the CS7 unlock then, I'm not sure how much it is ($75 = £40 or is there the normal 'European levy'?), I will consider sticking with a combination of CS6 and CN8. _________________ Chas

Blimey Strumble!!
Was expecting an increase due to more POIs and maybe a bit more mapping detail but can't fathom why so much more? After all the mapping data should be much of a muchness unless they've added significantly to the detail. On coverage for an entire country tile size shouldn't make much difference, surely? Garmin still only claim 'Coverage for major cities with intertown roads' for Spain in CN8, I would understand a significant increase if this had been upgraded to full coverage.
Might have to push more about getting CS7 as well as CN8. _________________ Chas
