My attempts to get the database to work with an IBM and Autoroute 2006 have not met with any success, am I missing the point and what I am trying is either too complicated for my limited talent, or is what I am attempting impossible?

Noproblem at all. You need a .csv version of the file then you use Data -Import Data wizard. Navigate to the folder where your .csv file is located and select it the follow the instructions.

Have you followed these instructions?
Once you get the installation sorted out, have a look at this interesting post.

Solved, as well as attention to the type of file required, this silly lad was downloading the pushpin set as a document file with its references to the OS grid, whereas Autoroute was expecting references to Lat/Long. Attention to the small print disclosed the Lat/Long option and from then all was well Thanks Again All a great help

Glad to be able to help.
Are you going to use this in a vehicle? What sort of mount are you going to use?

Vehicle is Automatic Vauxhall Omega --- Laptop is velcro secured to a home made plywood navdesk, it straddles the drive selector supported by two short sides which allow for the controls situated beneath it to be accessed with ease, its rear support is supplied by a piece of 2x1 extending from its lower surface towards the rear of the car where it rests upon the glove box between the two front seats. The computer is slanted towards the passenger. Mark 2 is the process of being made.

Some photos would be interesting, once you get Mark 2 up.
