receiver not working (i think)

hi all,
this is my first post, be gentle
i have a ipaq1710 with tom tom 5 software, it was working well a couple of weeks ago but now the receiver can't receive any satellites.
i think i remember seeing a red light in the receiver - this is no longer present, putting a volt meter in the supply shows just over 5 volts.
my question: do receivers stop working for no reason?

I had same problem with palm one GPS. It is Holux GR-230. There is a fundamental problem in the firmware. If the battery runs out completely it can get into a state where it can not work.

You would need to reprogram it connecting to pc using special cable (I am not 100% sure since the listing does not mention. But probably it is this one http://www.semsons.com/xxxx.html ). Or if it is in warranty send it to Back to Holux for reprogramming. I had called Palm. They ultimately had me send it back to Holux. I got it back in a week.
