I'm going to Italy this summer and want to take my Tomtom ONE. I'm looking to buy the map of Italy but never believed I'd be confused by the choice! I appreciate some come on SD and some on CD (which I guess I transfer to my own SD). The best buy seems to be what is called "Major roads of Europe" (which seems to be about the same price as Italy on its own!). But does "major roads" mean they just include motorways and main roads? Since I'm going to Garda, my guess is there'll be lots of narrow lanes. Will these not be included?

yes its the major roads, your prob best off buying maps of western europe(i got mine on genuine dvd from germany via ebay in 3 days), it has the gb & italian plus maps that should get you sorted.
you would prob need to only install the GB & italia plus maps.
the plus maps are the full map of the area plus the major roads connecting them.
someone correct me if theres a better solution.

"Main roads" means everything but the residential side streets. The detail is quite impressive, but it will not navigate you to an individual street or building. If all you want is navigation to towns and villages then it will do.

With an Italy Plus map you get the whole of Italy down to street level - i.e. all of the minor roads PLUS you get the major roads only (generally equivalent to A class) for the rest of Western Europe. With France Plus it is street level France plus the major raods for the rest and so on.

Thanks for the help.

Searching (and I really struggle to do that on the Tomtom site) it seems that my best bet would be to download the Italy map from the Tomtom site at about 60 euros. However, it's not called Italy Plus - in fact I can't find that anywhere.

Here's the link: http://www.tomtom.com/plus/services/mds.php

Could someone please confirm that this map will take me door to door? [/url]

Looking at the file size that has to be the Italy map PLUS version, I have just checked on my disks and Italy on its own is 200MB the Italy Plus map is over 300MB.
This map will take you from your location in the UK to the point of arival in country. You might find your location at home in the UK is not on this map, it depends if you live on a road defined as a "Major Road", but I am sure you won't need it to find a local main road or motorway.
If you leave a major road enroute you may find you go off the map, but generally they are very good - Mike
