It has to be named splash.bmp and goes in the Root of the SD Card.

Check also that you have rotated it 90 degrees clockwise before loading on to TT.

Oldboy... Are you sure?
I thought the format for the new widescreen devices is:
480x272 24bit 72dppi BMP **unrotated**
Copy to the root directory of the hard drive as splashw.bmp (not splash.bmp)

Another point to check:
Some if not all, Windows computers are shipped with the three letter file extensions "hidden" (to avoid confusing people? Evil or Very Mad ).
Therefore, it is really easy to accidently call the file splash.bmp.bmp or splashw.bmp.bmp without ever being able to see that you have.
To get rid of this annoying behaviour once and for all, go to the "Tools" menu in Windows Explorer or My Computer, select "Folder Options...", then on the "View" tab go to the 10th box down in the "Advanced settings" box and UN-tick "Hide extensions for known file types", then have a look at the file's name again.

Finally, I've heard that the "Home" software can convert images in other formats to work as splashscreens.

As for the picture coming up the first time it reboots and then never again, that means the format or the name is still wrong in some way.

Have you tried opening the original TomTom splash.bmp in whatever picture editing program you're using, click on "properties" or whatever its called, and matching your new picture to the size/shape/dots per inch/bit depth exactly?
