What are the overall best preferences for routing?

At the moment I'm using:

Q - S = Position 4
Motorways = Position 3
Urban = Position 2

What I'm trying to avoid is going out of my way to go on a motorway or main road and driving trough a city centre when it's not required!
A tall order I know but I just want a nice sensible route!

Anybody else fiddled with these settings and what were you trying to achieve?

My 510 seems to take me on some rather strange routes. In France last year it kept trying to take me down this farm track which was the long way round to the local town anyway. And it's got some trange ideas about the A65 too, kept trying to take me off, onto a B road and then back on to the A65 for some reason (this was in the middle of nowhere, so it wasn't trying to take me round a village)...

On the bike I turn the motorway slider down as far as it will go to keep me off the straight roads, which seems to work....

I leave all my settings on default except for the Quickest - Shortest one. I set that one above quickest.
