It's a like-for-like replacement so it's got a card slot. However, the very first start-up screen is has a 'copyright 2006' message so there's something about my new i3 that was made this year.
I tried it on the way home from work and it was all fine. I may have a vivid imagination, but I really think it runs faster and is less clunky than my old i3 with firmware 3.1.
At the mo, I've got firmware 3.1 and audio version 2.0. I think I'll persevere with 3.1 until it bites me. Either way, I'll report back here with any news.

they all come with a card slot but does it also have a transflash in the slot? _________________ i3 2.70(went to 2.82,3.0,3.1 but downgraded) with V8 map on microSD card

Yes it does need the card. I removed it just to check and most of the map detail disappeared.
However, I'm still puzzled by how good this new unit is with firmware 3.1. I've used it for a few hours (just as a test, no journeys into the unknown yet) and so far it's been faultless. No lockups, whiteouts - nothing. On my old i3, it was an instant shambles.
The firmware was installed at Garmin. I suppose they use the same update software, but I wonder why my old i3 was so dire with the new software and this new i3 is fine.
Perhaps the later ones have faster processors? Unlikely, but it would explain it. It would also explain why some posters report no problems with versions 3.0 and 3.1.
