axim x51 and tt5: cannot install

hi:
i tried to install tt5 in my sd card (which i used for some time on acer) on x51, i could not..
i deleted the tt files from sd card and replaced again with the cd, and tried again and failed again.
tt logo appears for few seconds and disappear!

can anyone suggest a solution? please...

There is the easy way to do this, download the TomTom Nav 5,21 application from www.tomtom.com and install that as the newer versions installer works with WM2005 devices, alternativley you can use the version you have but to get it to load you will need the CAB files coppied to the memory card then run each one in turn have a read through http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=27097&highlight=cab+files this details how you get at the CAB files - Mike

installed manually cab files in the root directory of the sd card.

also there were ini files=2.
whatever i installed all 6 of them in the root!
then opened them in x51 via explorer and run the ttn.cab file.
went like a dream!

cannot still understand this caused a problem?

Take a look at Brodit, they are a decent mount - not the cheapest but, do you really want to rely on a £10 unit holding £300's worth of PDA? as for a GPS unit go for SiRF-III equipped devices, again you get what you pay for. Do not try to use a CF GPS unit with the X51 as it simply will not work with tomtom5x, one other tip is make sure the CAB installer files are set to read only, then when the PDA goes wrong big time you can simply re-install the application, if not set to read only they will self delete once you run them - Mike

as for making cab files read only i think i have go via pc and make them read only using windows explorer? am i correct?

Correct, once you have the CAB files use Windows Explorer on the PC to set the file attribute to read only, then copy them back to a known location on the device either in the on board storage (make sure your PDA has a hard storage that won't get wiped if you power down) or put them on the memory card. Although as you are running WM2005 it shouldn't be too much of a problem, unless you have to hard reset the unit while out in the field - Mike

i have been looking for gps and powered mount for x51....

been looking at brodit, arkon, seidio, haicom, holux, rikaline for all day today......

got little confused because of wide array and different combinations etc.

also the problem of knowing whether one goes with the other?

arkon cm720 powered mount =$49.95
cm820 powered gps = $119.95= 64£
but has only sirf2 + xtrac2.0

seidio g2500= £62.95 @ expansys

haicom has good wired gps ( i dont like BT gps; as their life time is short etc!)

they also has 3 in 1 voice car holder

holux gr213 gps device (no, cf ones) again price? donot know
however some members ahve suggested gm270 and gps slim 236= BT one!

one has to buy a Y cable as well!

but i got really really interested in seidio G 4850s.............
BUT it is expensive and NOT sold in UK as far as i can find (with googling)

cost=$179.74= 96.80£ then shipping cost comes to another 17.33£!!!

now it is a cool one, and i saw a review in pgps about sister mount g4500!

but the expense and the thought o shipping the item back to europe if there is prob, puts me off...

could you please tell me if tt5 uses only nmea and not perhaps like sirf3; is there any advantage of going for sirf3 if using a tt5?

also how do you know which gps antennae goes with what mount etc?
it is really confusing then!

then i feel i am comfortable with acern35! just put it in the mount and off you go!!! 8)


aslo the issues of connections some have PS2 interface while some wants RS232 connections etc?

could some one kindly explain all these? please

ok i think arkon is a good choice.. and i know some well known members in this pgps likes arkon like none other!

i shopped at following;

BUT; all these have ss2 not sirf star3!

any ideas?

other option would be to go for arkon p/w mount only and buy sirf3 gps mouse seperately? is it worth that much?
or does arkon have ss3 gps?

The topic of NMEA vs SiRF has been discussed before, the problem is that TomTom will only use NMEA, but a SiRF-II or SiRF-III chipset equipped GPS unit will also output NMEA, the confusion comes about due to the same names for two entirely different things. The chipset type (hardware) and the data transfer protocol (the way the ones and zeros are transmitted from the GPS to the PDA).

The big advantage of SiRF-III equipped devices is the extra sensitivity they offer, when the going gets tough, built up city centres, Athermic glass screens, etc then they are the only type of hardware that can hang on to the signal, I wouldn't purchase anything less than SiRF-III these days.

My GPSlim236 is good for ten hours plus usage when fully charged, or you can leave it connected to the supply so it is always fully charged, I like the flexibility the BT unit offers, certain hire cars equal poor reception, solution, throw the GPS on the rear shelf - you can't do that with a wired device. Also it means you can take the devices out walking should you desire, not impossible with a wired device, but not easy as you need a 12V power source.

I can fully understand your confusion when it comes down to connectors, there are probably hundreds of combinations on the market, this is another reason I prefer the Bluetooth route, one less thing to worry about. The data transfer is RS232, however it could be passed through any sort of connecter, PS2 style is often found on the powered mounts, also a form of RJ11 (a bit like a modem cable connector) is sometimes used.

If you are adamant it must be a wired solution buy all the parts from a single source, explain the PDA type and leave the cable selection to them, at least you have some come back if it doesn't work correctly, personally I would cut the ties to the wired system, get a mount and power cable for the PDA and a SiRF-III Bluetooth GPS, its easier to move between cars as well. - Mike

my only worry is some time ago i read in pgps itself that bt- gps devices long last long!!!!
so i simply donot want to buy a device that will break down probably in a year and pay more as well!
that is my only worry!

i donot know whether nowadays bt gps devices are any better......

i need to find out then what ss3 gps mouse will go with an arkon p/w mount

though i fancy a seidio it is too expensive and no uk dealers ( for the unit i am looking!)

axim works fine with tt5 and seidio mount!
slight difference with speed over the acer n35 i would say!

funniest thing is i got 8sats while in tesco car wash, never before and never after!
so far so good!
