For the last 3-4 months I have found my IPAQ 2210 battery runs down when I leave it in the cradle (to which is also connected TomTom GPS receiver). This seems to happen despite the 2210 being turned off. It does not run down when I remove it from the cradle.

Thinking it might be a battery issue I bought the 2210 a new battery, but to no avail.

Funny thing is, I am almost sure that this has only been happening recently and did not used to happen.

Am I imagining this change?

Hi BrowningC
I have had a 2210 for about 18 months and I have never had the battery accidentally run down. But, I never leave it docked in the cradle and only place it in there to charge the PDA or synchronize.
What can be causing your trouble I do not know but if I were you I would leave the PDA in its leather pouch instead of the cradle.

Sorry didn't make it quite clear it is the TomTom carkit cradle to which I refer - in the car, with GPS receiver connected, but with the car power off.

Do you leave it switched off but without exiting the TT application? Leaving TT running when the unit is switched off causing battery drain is a known issue that TT have failed to address.

Another common fault with battery drain on PDA's (certainly Ipaq's) is the way you switch the device off, if you press and hold the power button the back light will go out, but the device is still live, give the power button a very short press and it will go off correctly.
Try this if you press and hold the power button for a few seconds the display is still visable under strong light, a simple tap on the screen should "wake up the unit"
A short press of the power button and the device should shut down, tapping the screen will do nothing to wake the device up - (sorry if you know this already, but its suprising how often I get asked this by friends/ work mates etc) - Mike

When you park the PDA in the cradle does the orange light go on to the right of the bluetooth light. Also is bluetooth switched on on the PDA?

The orange light is on when the cradle is powered, and the bluetooth light is not flashing. I am quite sure everything is working correctly when the cradle is powered, and I am inclined to believe that the problem is one of the issues referred to above - I am very inclined to leave TomTom running when the machine is down, and I may well not turn the PDA off properly.

Many thanks for all the helpful replies.

This may be of use to you...or it might not :D

I have found that if the sd card is accidentally ejected and pushed back in whilst the Ipaq is turned off...
1. The ipaq ( and the sleeping TT..assuming it hasn't been exited) springs into life
2. You turn the Ipaq off
3. Severe powerdrain is experienced on the 2210 even when turned off and off the cradle.

The way I found to resolve this is to turn on the Ipaq, close tt, remove the card, switch off the ipaq, turn on the ipaq, reinsert the card

Hope tis might help

Don't know if this will help you but..

I found that power in my 2190 would drain, TT would start running with the ipaq switched off! I know because sometimes I would switch it on again before the battery was totally flat, despite the fact that I had had exited the application and checked that it was no longer listed in the running programs. It seems as though the ipaq periodically notices the SD card and runs the software!

I did start taking the SD card out for a while, which works, but found that leaving the device "locked" before turning off also prevents TT starting and the battery remains full.

Even if your problem isn't that the TT is starting locking may have some effect on input/output so may be worth trying.

Cheers
