Signal Lock in BC, Canada?

I have a friend in British Columbia in a town not too far north of Vancouver. He claims that his Garmin eTrex Legend would easily lose signal lock in forest cover and even in an open meadow.

Is Vancouver far enough north for this problem to be normal? It sure doesn't seem like it but I thought I'd check.

The G in GPS stands for Global. Except for the extreme polar areas it will always work equally well. What he maybe referred to is SBAS (WAAS in his case) - since these satellites are geostationary over the equator they will indeed not be visible too well from so high a latitude. But the standard GPS sats will be visible just fine.
