Hello All.

Can you help me..

I am using an M5 for about an year with no troubles at all, not only in North America but also in Europe..

I have not used the unit for about 2 months , but today I found the unit took over 45 minutes to acquire a signal, once in the morning going to work and about the same time coming back home in the evening..

Is my unit about to go KAPUTS or are the satellites playng with me.. :-)

All other functions work as normal.

Thank you for your help.

It sounds like it needed to download all the ephemeris? data from the satellites to know where it was in the world. This can take 45 minutes, however it is strange that it needed to do it twice. I would try it again, and if it happens again contact Garmin. I hope you are just within the warranty period.

Good, glad that worked. The M5 seems a nice unit. I previously had a cf que 1620 which looks like it comes with the same software and similar gps specs. Traded upto a nuvi, but although one gets sirfstar III and 3d view, you loose lots of the little settings of the older que software. Multiple vias, avoidance areas, no mapsource integration etc. The cf que used to play like your M5 occasionally. They will also do that if you move more than 100 miles from when last used.

Hi again,

as you have more knowledge than I have in this filed, do you recommend that an M5 is a good unit for use when travelling , driving and/or walking ?

What other units are as good and available for similar prices..

Would an external antenna shorten the satellite acquring time ?

good day and many thanks...

I've not used an external antenna so can't say. All I can say is that the nuvi sirfstar III was quicker at initial acquisition and maintained a better lock. Maybe the newer M series units would be better than your M5, but I don't know if they have similar missing features like the nuvi. THe nuvi is a great device, but if you need more than 1 via per route then don't buy it. Really depends on your needs. You won't get any better routes if you get a different device, it just might present itself a bit nicer than your M5 (3d view).
