I read somewhere on the forum that POI Edit is not currently supported for speed camera databases - when I first set it up for my Loox 720 / Navigon this was your recommended way of using the speed camera database.

Do you intend to support POI EDit in the future and if so when?

(as it does appear to allow for authenticated access)

That link doesn't seem to work.

I've recenty reinstalled POI-Edit, and it does seem to be getting camera database files from pocketgpsworld.com.

Are these old files?

Never mind, I found a relevant thread by searching. It seems they are old files, though not too out of date at the moment. I think I'll stick with the free ones until they come up with an automatic way of updating the subscription files.

You need to be a subscriber before you can access it.

I'm with you on that. What a half baked idea to stop the simple automatic updates that were possible, and simultaneously start charging for making things miles more hassle! Great thinking guys! Before you started on your nice little earner you should have got it working properly.

I've seen the question asked several times now - are you going to get it working with POIEdit again, and have yet to spot a reply.

What REALLY annoys me, is that I had no idea that this had happened until today. Instead of emailing subscribers, you just let us think the updates were happening as normal. Today, for the first time, I got an error on docking my PDA when it tried to get the updates. From what I read here, it's been downloading old files for months. Thanks guys, nice job all round. :x

A bit unfair I think. The Pocket World team work hard for our benefit and you should be grateful for what you have had (free) thus far. Clearly you do not access the site frequently otherwise you would have known about the changes at the beginning of the year. They can hardly be blamed for that now, can they?!

Not at ALL unfair. Grateful? Yup, I am. Would I have paid? Yes, undoubtedly - IF they hadn't made it ten times more hassle, IF they had got it working with POIEdit before they went live. No, they are not responsible for my not having visited regularly, but why would I need to? All was (or so I thought!) working fine, so as a busy man, what cause would I have to visit the site after all was set up and working?

They COULD have emailed the registered user base to say they were going to start charging, and they COULD have made sure that POIEdit started reporting an error - and thus driving me to the site to find out why - as soon as they did, but did they? Nah. None of the above. They let me think till this very day that my PDA was getting the updates, and thus they were putting my - oh, and I guess hundreds and hundreds of other peoples' - driving licence at unnecessary risk.

Let's get this straight; I have NO objection to paying the money. However, it's unbelievable in my opinion that they would start charging without telling people by mail, and more importantly, they disable the automatic and simple process by which people get their updates at the same time. Want my (and others') money? Well, get the updates by POIEdit fixed BEFORE starting to charge.

It's a bit like somebody fitting you with a colostomy bag, and charging for it, except of course they don't tell you about it.

POI Edit is compatible with only a few of the many platforms we support and is used by very small proportion of the userbase. As such it is something we have always planned to include but it is not a priority at the moment.

With the release of TomTom Home in v6 it may even become obsolete!

As for not contacting everyone via email to announce the charge, we only contact those subscribers who have registered for our Newsletter which is consistent with our No Spam and No Unsolicited email policy.

Thanks Darren - but I work in this industry, and I KNOW that POIEdit is in fact used by a much larger proportion of the userbase than you suggest - perhaps even without your knowing; all of the users that we have supplied TTN have been using POIEdit. Not notifying registered members by mail is one thing, but continuing to allow POIEdit to download obsolete information until this week is inexcusable, careless, and irresponsible.

I'm afraid that you reply is highly unpalatable, as it attempts to conceal the reality, that you are putting the money before the users. Very sad, I fear. I've no objection to paying the money at all, as I say - but since you are making the money from it, you could at least have an auto-upgrade method in place that's as easy and user friendly as POIEdit. Instead you show wanton disregard for your inconveniencing a large number of people in the rush to start charging. I am SO disappointed by you. Sad

I'm sorry to hear that, we try our best but I suppose we'll never please everyone.

With only 24hours in a day we can't do everything immediately.

Absolutely - and as I say, I appreciate the work that goes into the database, and would happily pay for it; but there ARE large numbers of POIEdit users, despite what you say, and I think you should have used some of the 24 hours available in each day to 1) Get an autoupdate working before the rush to start charging and 2) to make sure that POIEdit was not continuing to download obsolete data for several months.

These things make me think that you don't try your best, and on the face of it, it's not a case of not pleasing everyone, or even trying to - it simply smacks of lets get money in from this, and never mind the consequences to users. Sad

Or perhaps; just overwhelmed with the Safety Camera database, which as that probably affects most (if not all) paying subscribers must naturally be the first priority.

I am sure, that if they didn't put every spare hour into improving that, there would be even more complaints, since to many of us, that is what you pay for - anything else is a bonus.

Overwhelmed being the operative word! Just had to train up our second full timer and looks as if a third will be needed in the future.

Not a complaint, good news all round really. The camera database is improving daily and it's now started to create jobs. This site is one of those projects where we'll never catch up with all the work. As they say, the tail is wagging the dog Wink
