I have a streetPilot i3 and have loadede the speed camera database using the GARMIN POI loader. Now how do I know the work? drove past a speed camera site (mobile) today and nothing happened, one way in navigation mode the othe in map mode. So what is supposed to happen? I would have expected a warning or a map icon or both but nothing.

By the way what are the default settings for time and or distance on the database anyway? Question

Did you use the manual or automatic option in POIloader?

Have you got Proximity Alerts on - Settings / Navigation / Proximity Alerts?

If so you should get an audible alert and a red line across the top of the screen with a description.

I get a warning 'bing, bing' when approaching a camera even if I'm not near the speed limit, followed by repeated 'bongs' if I exceed it. Confused

At least that's what happens for Gatsos, red lights & mobiles, which is all I've encountered locally. I haven't been too far afield with the i3 yet, certainly not on motorways, as East Sussex doesn't have any!

nevboy

you stated that it was a mobile site.
as the database works only on known locations it may be that this is the first time that someone using the database has come across it.

using easygps locate the coords for the site and submit as a new site.

try driving at a more perminant site such as a gatso, at the speed limit, and see what happens then.

you can also simulate a route at home, driving past a known site. the warnings should appear then, if all set up correctly. Wink

The main thing to realise is that that i3 doesnt DETECT the cameras.

All it does is have a database of where they are (in the case of mobile ones, I have discovered its far from exact - best to watch out on the whole stretch of road), then when you approach this entry in its database, you get warned initially.

It will say "3omph speed limit ahead" at the top in red, and it will be displayed on the map.

Then, if you continue to go over 30, it will beep and the icon will remain on the map. Go 30 or below and the warning sound and icon disappear.

I think the icon and warning is permanent for red light cameras until you pass the location.

I have an Inforad as well as an i3.

The Inforad is a lot more accurate than the i3. The speed camera alerts are a lot more accurate, when you hear the Inforad beep you know exactly how far in front it is (this distance is user definable) I will be great when the i3 database is this good.

the accuracy has never before been questioned on here, although a lack of understanding of how the database works has thrown up a few blinding questions.
the database is "user definable" check out the stickys at the start of this forum.

if you use cbroms or ash10's utility's (see stickies at top of forum) then you can set a user defined distance for camera warnings dependant on speed.

this isn't an issue with the databse, it's an issue with the i3 and garmin's poi loader software. the database simply tells the unit where the camera is - the i3/software is what then decided when it will beep etc.

Thanks to everybody for replying. The problem is now solved, I did not down load the POIloader version of the database!. It all goes to show that the instructions need to be a lot clearer both for the I3 and here on this site.

By the way I don't seem to get an icon on the map, I get the warnings etc.

Thanks again.

make sure that the icon folder was downloaded.

if so then the icon will only show, in the non-bastardised format, if you are in excess of the speed limit attached to that particular camera on the database, within the set proximity.

Hi Steve,

From the FAQs:

Q. Why is the speed wrong on my Garmin when I approach a camera?

A. Have you selected KPH instead of MPH on the POI Loader?
