Autorouting on Vista C

I recently purchased the Garmin Vista C as an upgrade from my Legend. So far other than having the extra memory to store maps, it’s been more of a headache for me.

The biggest problem I am having is getting routes to work correctly. I use MapSource MetroGuide 6 for my routing and download them into my Vista C. Each time I plan a trip I use multiple waypoints to make sure the proper route is used. The routes look fine and they way I want to travel on the PC, but once I send them to the Vista problems arise.

Once downloaded, the Vista automatically calculates the route and changes the "desired route" to its determined route. What's weird though, is the route it chooses is not only off course, but it has loops, segments shooting off the main route, or even has me backtrack to another location.

I've made sure that all my waypoints are correct, and even after speaking to a Garmin representative, it seems all the settings are correct in both the MapSource and Vista (including routing on both ends). Nothing I do corrects the issue and I'm unsure how to resolve this.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance for any insight you can bring.

Hmm, Metroguide is routable on the PC but not on the GPS isn't it?

So you could create a route on the PC, upload it to the GPS and then the GPS should route using it. However, the Vista C sounds like it wants to recalculate the route to fit the maps you have loaded but it has no routing information.

My advice is to get City Select. Not a cheap option though.

I dont know if this helps, but Ive just got a legend C and had the same problems. Looked great on PC, when i tried it, it was sending me all over the place!!
After much messing, I went into the routes menu, and changed the follow road option, to the off road guidance method. Now it works as it should. I dont know if the vista has the same options, but I got to it through SETUP-then onto ROUTING SETUP.
It seems to run well on this, my settings in the routing setup menu are:
Off road
Faster time
Pop up ON
Off route recalc OFF
Calc method BEST ROUTE

Just to refresh this topic, since my last posting, Garmin issued the V8 update to City Navigator Europe. It cost me £50 for the honour of being allowed to use it with my Garmin hardware.

Since I already knew that I would have two fresh "unlocks" with the new update, I took the opportunit to upgrade my handheld GPS unit.

I sold off my Vista C along with the original CN V7 discs while retaining a copies to be able to continue to use CN7 with my Streetpilot 2610 (until V8 was up and running). This is in accordance with previously received advice from Garmin UK. The ownership of both the Vista C and CN V7 was also notified and recorded by Garmin.

When the CN V8 arrived, I unlocked it to work with my SP 2610 and the new Vista Cx (now equipped with a 256MB microSD card instead of the crap 32MB card that came with it).

The Vista Cx now has the maps for the whole of the UK and Ireland, Holland and part of Germany installed. Street level navigation in a handheld unit. Awesome!

Could anyone tell me the total number of map tiles there are to cover the whole of the UK in MetroGuide v5, v6 and v7 also how much memory each version takes up ??

...but don't see what you will ascertain from it. You're lucky that I have not bothered to uninstall V5 -7 even though I can no longer use them with my current Garmin units:

V Tiles Memory

5 95 132.9M

6 53 154.1M

7 54 162.7M

So as you can see, the data in each "tile" increase steadily until V8 when it ballons because Garmin have sharply reduced the number of tiles. Ireland is now one tile as is Scotland north of Edinburgh and most of East Anglia. This is exactly why I upgraded my Vista from the C to a Cx version, I needed to be able to use microSD cards to hold the large map tiles of City Navigator V8.

As you can see, the UK from V8 fits easily into my £15 microSD card. Each map tile varies between 6 and 10 MB. By constrast, the largest map tile in V5 is 3.77 MB.

If you own a Vista C, live near the corner of a tile and wanted to install the 4 adjacent tiles into the Vista C to give yourself full local coverage, you'd probably be snookered. By V9 - most certainly you will be as the amount of detail steadily increases or Garmin increase the area of each tile.

Thanks for the tile info.I think that Garmin by decreasing the number of map tiles are saying to Joe public ...if you want to use our more up to date maps you will have to upgrade your gpsr .
